I went back out to look specifically for any more, and I couldn’t find any. No one is exhibiting any symptoms at all.
So maybe just shedding cecal cells?
These are the vertical nipples. They hang straight down. The poultry pecks at the silver trigger to let the water flow.
These are the horizontal nipples. The chickens are great at pushing the silver trigger sideways to get the water out, but the turkeys just could not manage it.
So.
I tried the vertical nipples. And although I immediately remembered how intensely I hate them because they *always* drip no matter how much I fiddle with them, the turkeys seemed to pick it up pretty intuitively.
It’s probably worth it to see if I can get some gaskets and some food grade...
I give up.
These turkeys just are not catching on to the nipples. I’ve been doing a bunch of research, and I found at least one site that said that their beak/eye coordination deteriorates with age. So maybe they just can’t manage the horizontal nipples.
Welp. I hand watered them half a dozen times today. Pecan did pretty well, and I think will pick it up. Tater did only ok. Stuffing flatly refused to open his beak at all.
I’ll try again tomorrow.
I got them moved out to a pen in a shady corner of the chicken meadow. I pulled the open water dish out and just let the closed container in there. I’ve been holding their beaks in the nipples periodically throughout the day. I really, REALLY want this to work. Open waterers are such a pain!
Sooooooo...are turkeys smart enough to figure out horizontal chicken nipples for water? My chicks figured it out quickly, but the turkeys are completely ignoring them. I really, REALLY want them using a closed waterer.
Got flight feathers trimmed today in anticipation of time outside tomorrow. Plus, I dragged the chain link panels back to the meadow so I can start on their pen.
My current chicken coop is a Fort Knox of chicken keeping. *Nothing* is getting in there.
However, I have since surrounded my...
The woman I got them from gave me a bag of the food she was using, so that’s what I’ve got in there with them.
They aren’t huddled or unhappy looking. I’ve checked them several times, and they’re currently sleeping peacefully. They’re cozy but not burrowing underneath each other as if they...
Forgive me if these have been asked before. I’ve been hunting through the forums and have some questions specific to my situation unanswered still.
1. I got the poults today at four weeks old. Two royal palms and one Spanish black. Got them home, tucked them into the brooder. They haven’t...
I’m using primarily wood mulch as litter. I do toss in shavings when I clean out the brooder, but it’s mostly mulch. It’s only gotten a little smelly twice. One time, I fixed it by adding a couple more wheelbarrows of mulch. The second time it was because my goofy chickens like to roost up on...
It’s 16’ from front door to back wall and 7.5’ wide. Height in the middle is roughly 6’. I’m 5’5”, and I can comfortably walk anywhere inside.
The deep litter is working brilliantly! No stink, no flies (inside the coop, at least), and no shit shoveling on my part. I couldn’t be happier.
I’m...
