    Heritage Breeds PNW?

Hi! So, I recently lost my sweet 8 year old Buff Orpington to ascites. And, of course, now I’m thinking of more chickens. We currently have a small flock of 4, and they are pets, so I don’t need them to be good layers. I just want them to be hardy, long-living friendly lap chickens. 😊 I’m...

    Older Pet Chicken -Ascites

Thanks so much! That’s the amount I’ve been giving her. The label said for 7-10 days. It’s the 8th day today, and this will probably be the last day I give it to her. I decided to use milk thistle instead of draining due to the inherent risks, and it seems to be working. She’s doing much...

    Older Pet Chicken -Ascites

Thank you so much for taking the time to share and for the link to your article. With the Milk Thistle, Gabrielle’s belly has gone down steadily, and is about 1/3 of what it was last week. It still needs to go down more, so I’ve ordered the products you mentioned and will start her on those...

    Older Pet Chicken -Ascites

Thanks for checking in on Gabrielle. She’s hanging in there. I think I figured out the proper dosage for Baytril, and have also started her on Milk Thistle. We’re taking it day by day.

    Older Pet Chicken -Ascites

Hello. I have looked through the forum threads, and am overwhelmed by the different suggestions, so thought I'd try with a new thread. I have a question about Baytrel 10% oral solution. My pet chicken, Gabrielle, is 8 years old, no longer lays, has never been ill, and is the matriarch of a tiny...

Help - Chicken at Deadly Nightshade Berry

I gave a little bit of charcoal, but that was all. There were some stinky droppings in the morning, so maybe it helped.

It’s been 24 hours and Gabrielle seems fine. Yay! Thanks for all your help, everyone. What a great group.

Help - Chicken at Deadly Nightshade Berry

Ours do free-range, but supervised, which is how I saw her eat the berry from one of the two scraggly plants that somehow made it past my diligent eradication from our yard this spring/summer/fall. Here's a link to the different types of nightshade plants...

Help - Chicken at Deadly Nightshade Berry

The Deadly Nightshade that we have is: Solanum nigrum L. It's listed in Gail Damerow's Chicken Encyclopedia as toxic to chickens.

Help - Chicken at Deadly Nightshade Berry

Only DE. They seem to be greatly reduced. The molt is helping. I also really cleaned everything and DE on the other girls, too. I might need to go more severe if they keep up. But wanted to go the least toxic method first.

So far, she's fine. I'll keep checking through the night.

Help - Chicken at Deadly Nightshade Berry

So far, she's seeming fine. She's recovering from mites, too (I've been doing heavy cleaning and lots of Diatomaceous Earth), along with just beginning her molt, so she's in a fairly stressed state. I'll keep checking on her, but so far, so good. Thanks for the quick response!

Help - Chicken at Deadly Nightshade Berry

Done! I've been keeping a close eye on that area as there are a lot of this plant that grows there. This year most were blocked by grass, and I dug up every one that I saw. This plant was only about 8" tall and hidden in the last remaining grass around a few wildflowers.

Help - Chicken at Deadly Nightshade Berry

I didn't find anything exactly on this issue, and apologize if it's a repeat! But... My sweet pet, Gabrielle, a 4 year old Buff Orpington (approx. 6 #'s) just ate a Deadly Nightshade Berry during supervised free-range. The plant was small and only had a couple berries. She saw it at the same...

Hi! I'm new to the group, but have known about BYC since I got chickens, and love, love, love the forums! This group is amazing. I've had backyard chickens for 5 years, and, currently have 10 chickens from 5 months to 5 years old (6 Buff Orpington, 1 Easter Egger, 1 Jersey Giant, 1...
