    Normal or sick?

After laying her egg this morning (usually lays one) my leghorn is walking g around restlessly and panting. She is the only one panting. I do not know if this is normal or not. She let me pick her up and after trying to cool her down one bit of drool came out of her mouth. There is no stench...

    Hatching guinea eggs

Now it seems I have another concern. I rescued 2 eggs from my lost hen and eggs. One has hatched and one has not. Will the single keet be ok if the second egg doesn’t hatch? I am on day 30 and did the water candling. There is movement but no sound from inside the egg. I am driving myself...

    Hatching guinea eggs

I don’t think any of the four I have left are hens. Being inexperienced we left the “mom” to her job. I guess we should have moved her to the coop. I am so sad this happened.

    Hatching guinea eggs

Unfortunately a predator got the hen and all her eggs. All her diligence was for nothing. I still have 2 in the incubator and am keeping my fingers crossed since I am an amateur.

    Help with guinea eggs

My guinea hen laid her clutch of eggs in a wooded area near our home. Things were moving along nicely. On or about the 26th day of her diligence a predator got her and all her eggs or keets (not sure if they had hatched yet). My husband and I were devastated being new owners. Prior to this...

    Hatching guinea eggs

my female guinea has been on her nest 25 days. Lately she has been returning to eat, drink and return. I really don’t know when to stop her brooding. And what to do if they do hatch or don’t hatch. Recently I removed two eggs from the nest because there were broken eggs surrounding it. Now I...

    Guinea hens egg laying

The egg song? They seem to be “peeping” more than screaming. Is that it? I do have to say though, the five I have left are always together. I haven’t seen a change in that behavior.

    Guinea hens egg laying

First, I must say I am not sure which are males/females. I read that hens will start laying in spring. My guineas free range my property during the day and are locked up at night. ( I am trying to prolong their lives.) My question has to do with egg laying: do the hens create a nest and stay on...

Are they smart enough to hide?

These were not big enough to be turkey vultures. Pretty sure they were hawks. I only had 6 guineas and the last time they stayed out all night, I woke up to 5. I put them in their coop every evening whether they like it or not. I did the whole keet thing in the summer and was overwhelmed...

Are they smart enough to hide?

I think they think they did hide. LOL I have a few that will fly into a fenced in portion of our yard and then spend the next 5 hours trying to figure out how to get back out.

Are they smart enough to hide?

I got them at a day old and followed advice from others who had already done this. I am not seeing sensible at all. Although they do stick close around the property and for that I am grateful because I have heard they are wanderers. I can only hope this turns out well for them.

Are they smart enough to hide?

They actually have plenty of places to take cover. I get the feeling the hawks need to be quite close before they realize the danger. They don’t appear to get be very bright birds.

Are they smart enough to hide?

Today while the guinea fowl were wandering the yard, I noticed a hawk circling above. Before long there were 4 of them. The guineas seemed totally unmoved by this danger while the rooster made haste into his coop. My question is, are they smart enough to take cover? I actually shooed them into...

    Silly, but serious, question

You are wonderful taking so much time for me. I got the keets the first of June when they were a day old. I read tons of info on them and was quite proud of myself getting all 6 to survive after reading all the do’s and dont’s about keets. There are two that seem to scuffle and the one being...

    Silly, but serious, question

I am in NJ and new to this. Dogs have always been my thing and actually this seems quite similar. Just concerned about how long this “fighting” episode goes on. Is it a fight or flight thing or a fight to the death or just a mean girls act? I guess I’ll just let them work it out. Thanks for...

    Silly, but serious, question

since I am new to the guinea fowl life, I was watching two of my guineas scuffle. I thought it was a case of bullying, but I am now wondering if it is a mating ritual. What do I look for to know the difference. I am hoping you don’t find this question odd. Thanks.

    New Guinea hen ownerld

I am definitely new to this whole backyard farm animal life. Thanks to backyard chickens advice I managed to get my guinea fowl and raise them where they return to their coop at night and are healthy. However, they are never far from me. Wherever I am in our yard if they hear my voice they find...
