I bought 10 chicks at $1.50 each $15
4 died young
the remaining six eat about 100lbs of feed in their time. Thats roughly $30 in feed. they cost me $7.50 plus 2 months of daily care.
I blame myself for the deaths because i stopped giving them chick care, simply because they were bigger than...
people don't like broilers because they are messy and rather sad animals to watch, in that they are rather pathetic creatures, thats why most chicken lovers don't fancy them. They like to see the chickens run and play and be merry chickens about the farm, and broilers just eat, poop, and drink...
its my experience that standard breeds, even the larger ones, are rather disappointing once the feathers are off. He'll likely be tastey if you can soften his tissues, but they'll never be anything like cornishx.
I wouldn't say its cruel, I just think it shows a lack of respect for animals. Like those people who give their dogs ridiculous haircuts. Its socially acceptable, but it seems asinine to me.
I tend to be more of a think than a doer.
I'm good at coming up with good ideas, but suck at actually putting them into action. Tedious minutia burns my interest like a bale of hay soaked in kerosene.
this is my first foray into any sort of wiring, and so have NO idea what so ever as to how to join a light bulb to a thermostat. I will try adding more insulation.
how many bulbs do you normally go through in a typical incubation cycle?
thanks guys, I got it wired up and running, but I'm having an issue with heat now.
I'm using a 60 watt bulb and can only get to 98.3 degrees. If it was mid to high 99, I could stomach it, but i think a low 98 is too low for my own comfort.
I am using a 35 gallon rubbermaid bin with aluminum...

finding serious professionals with a healthy understanding of genetics and animal husbandry is a big problem here. Education here is very lacking, and only recently has college become a common goal for the youth. With that said, if you know a breeder anywhere that would be willing to go...
I have chickens for eggs. I don't turn a profit, not in terms of capital, but i sell eggs to my neighbors, that pays for the feed, and then my family of three eats about 2 dozen eggs a week for free. But i'd say only one dozen per week is truly profit, and the other goes into paying for food...
eat the still beating heart of your defeated foes, it will give you courage.
No, don't do that, its a joke from an adult cartoon.
But this is the frame of mind I like to adopt before butchering. Imagine yourself a hungry savage, the only thing standing between you and food is a head, guts...
thanks for the pointers.
I'd guess shes some kinda NZ Californian mix, again, about 5-6 lbs.
When the man sold me the doe, she already had a litter in the same box, so she has birthed in it before. he said it was the standard size for all his boxes.
Winter around here is very mild, you could...
but even different individuals have higher or lower thresholds for pain though. Like all other human perceptions, its subject to variation from one person to the next for any number of reasons.
thats true. Some treat death like something unnatural and extraordinary.
There is also this severely unrealistic habit of projecting human characteristics on to animals. Its hard not to, i admit, some times i give my animals credit for being intelligent, when its really just some clever...
What size should my birthing box be for a 5-6lb rabbit?
i was given a 9x11 box by the old man who set me up, but it seems crowded.
My rabbit gave birth to 9 kits last night. I'm concerned that some will be crushed, or perhaps it will be too crowded for them all to feed adequately.
When i got...
its crazy how detached from such a basic fact of life people are.
Humans have been killing animals for sustenance since before they were even technically human, or if you prefer, since creation. Suddenly in the last 30 years killing your own food has become heinous and unfathomable.
The best...
I did a google search and some fellas on a marijuana grow site said they had success with any old cell phone adapter.
So i tried that with an old cellphone adapter and an old PC fan i had.
If it burns out or shorts for whatever reason, i have a brand new fan on standby, I'll just go to radio...
I'm trying to wire a PC fan to run from the wall outlet.
I have read that I need an AC/DC 12v adapter with a minimum of .33a to match the specs of the fan.
Is this true?
Have any of you done it differently with success?
also, what do i do with the 3rd wire on the PC fan?
I have red, black...
3 birds died within the first week.
Lots of sneezing going on, but none of the others seem as sick as the three that died. I think I won't buy from that farm store anymore.
$4.50 out of the $15 down the drain, not to mention the food they consumed, and more, the food they wasted.
