Last update: had to assist about 9 chicks and they are so weak. 3 didn’t make it and two are fine, the other 4 have slim chances. There were no other instances of wry neck and I discovered a few chicks stuck at the back of the bator!! I’m going to do eggtopsied tomorrow. I believe humidity was...
Update: There were 4 sticky chicks when I opened the bator against last night. I would not say shrink-wrapped because all of the chicks that I had to move to a separate incubator did not face humidity issues. 1/4 was already dead in the shell without making it very far. The other 3 needed...
My thermometer was only in the middle region so there may have been cold spots within the incubator itself. I did not rotate the egg positions. I will update with the total outcome, which will lead to more conclusive findings. I've been doing this for about three years now and I feel like I'm...
This incubation process was actually a research method focusing on refrigeration and its effects on development. I would definitely say that temperature had a factor as the ones I put in at room temp have hatched about one day late. Some of the eggs were refrigerated for a week while others were...
Hi everyone! I need some help with some incubation issues I'm having. Today is day 22-23 for these chicks, which are Buff Orpington and Wyandotte mixes. The cabinet incubator I am renting/using is a GFQ 1202, large and holds temperature steadily but requires lots of water because of the fan...
To update this thread, I wasn’t using the best incubator (never again), and the fan was blowing directly on the chick. I don’t think it made it. I’m having the same problem with the saddle shaped spaces in the pointy ends and I believe they are signs of malposition
Hi everyone!
Yesterday afternoon, I realized my quail chicks were hatching in the turner. I let the ones that were hatching continue to hatch, and then moved all of them to the hatcher with a high humidity. I believe several are shrink wrapped, although the humidity in the initial incubator was...
I did this a bit too late, as the shell was so stuck to the tissue that it came off. However, the chick already zipped past this area . He cannot get out so I am going to attempt an assist. I have two others who are also like this, shrink-wrapped, and I applied coconut oil to the exposed...
I think another chick had some gunk on him, which fused this chick’s egg to the incubator liner that I placed. He has zipped all the way around except for a bit and can’t push himself out, because I think he is stuck. He’s placed right under the fan, which is probably why. My humidity is high...
So the eggs are hatching now! The latter picture I showed was a malposition, with the pip at the pointy end of the egg. The chick had started to zip but then the other chicks rolled him over! Can he suffocate this way?
There have been a few malpositions this time around, but all have hatched...
Also, most of them are not as empty as this one, however some are. There is definite movement and the veins are not retracting. Humidity has been around 30-40 all hatch. I have a bunch of thermometers and they all read 99-100
Ok, so it’s morning now and the sun is blaring so I’ll candle again in the afternoon, but here’s what I was able to get now:
All my actual candlers broke so I’m using a phone light. One picture is the bottom and the other is the air cell.
Today is day 18, they were set on May 17th at 6 am
So I’m on the last few hours of day 17 now, approaching day 18. I candled a few eggs today just to see the progress. When I candle, a lot of the eggs are empty on the bottom/pointy end, or there is a wavy network of veins. However, when I tap the shell, the dark mass moves. These eggs are Easter...
So I sat next to the incubator and waited for the timer to go down, and just noticed that when the Turner timer ends, the actual turning tray doesn’t work, but if I click the button, it does. I’m going to be doing that for the rest of the hatch. Thanks for the advice!
