I read through this thread with great interest when I was trying to decide what breed of dog to get (if any). I wanted one that would be good with chickens and there were also quite a few other criteria that we needed to meet as well (mostly indoor dog, good with kids, calm, not stinky, etc)...
I noticed today that one of my hens has blood on her wings. I'm looking for advice on what I should do to help her. Should I isolate her from the others for a few days so they won't be tempted to peck at her? Should I put triple antibiotic on her? This is a new issue for me so I don't know what...
We have 10 chickens, but I think that my 2 EE's that hatched at the end of May haven't started laying yet. That leave 8 layers. 2 of those are molting, and then 1 or two are just free loading for the winter.
I got 89 eggs in January.
We had a good stash of eggs built up for awhile. Then...
My chickens don't seem to mind the snow at all. But a couple weeks ago, we had a few cold days and the chickens decided not to leave their coop. I started getting concerned that they weren't coming out at all. Then when my daughter went out to feed them (after 10 days of them not leaving the...
My chickens like to look at us through the basement window in the exercise room while we are working out. They also spend a good deal of their time on the steps in front of the french doors in the dining room. Of course, part of the reason they like to be there is because we often open the door...
you said it is for a laying hen... Is there a reason you aren't just feeding her own egg shells back to her? That's what we do.
Every time we have an egg shell left over when we cook an egg, we put it into a dish to save. Then we put the shells in the oven after we cook something (while it is...
We keep our compost in a plastic garbage can with a lid. Last summer, some meatballs accidentally got put in there. The next time I opened the lid, the inside of the can and lid were covered in maggots. It was so gross! I freaks out and tossed the lid on the ground. All the sudden, the chickens...
we started saving our cartons as soon as we got our first chicks. We had to buy a carton of jumbo sized eggs for some of our to fit, but it turns out that ours are bigger than store bought jumbo eggs too. We also have some plastic containers that came with the fridge that work really well for...
I couldn't vote for the type of light I use. We use a strand of 25 LED Christmas lights on a timer for 4 hours in the morning. This brings their total amount of light (LED and then daylight) to about 14 hours. We started in Oct after egg production stopped. This solved the problem and brought...
We swapped out our regular 60 watt light bulb for a string of 25 LED Christmas lights a few weeks ago. Egg production has been the same or better for us since we switched. I did it because I wanted to avoid the fire risk of a regular bulb. Our timer goes on around 4am and off around 8am.
I have 10 chickens. 8 have been laying regularly and I think the youngest 2 are holding out until spring time at this point. One of my 8 'regulars' just started molting, so she isn't laying right now either. Out of the other 7, I have been getting 4-6 eggs per day.
When the days suddenly...
I got chickens for the eggs. Both of my bosses have chickens... one keeps chickens for eggs, and the other raises chickens for meat each year. This spring, they were both telling me how easy chickens are to care for, and I had just moved (to a different area that probably wouldn't make a big...
I have 7 young hens laying, and I'm waiting on 3 more to start. This is my first time ever having chickens (starting in April). A couple weeks ago, when the days started seeming shorter, we noticed the egg production went way down- we were averaging about 3 per day instead of about 6 per day...
One of my girls, hatched on April 10, 2010 has been laying for about 2 months now, and her eggs are HUGE! We have gotten quite a few double yolkers from her. My other young ones, about the same age as her, are laying smaller eggs than my 1 yr old hens.
When I bought my 4 adult chickens and brought them home, they went from laying every day for their original owner, to almost nothing for about 2 weeks. Then they started laying, but didn't get back to normal until about 3 weeks after the move.
One of my hens lays eggs so big that they won't even fit into the jumbo cartons. The jumbo store eggs look small next to her eggs, and in fact, most of our "normal sized" eggs are as big or bigger than the jumbos from the store. We have a plastic egg holder that came with my mom's refrigerator...
