He is a blue icebar. One hen is a barred rock and the other australorps. He's big (about the size of the previous Roo who was an australorp). The hens are smaller than the rooster, but they aren't small chickens.
I got him when he was 3 months old. He's about 9 months now. Initially, he was...
He is a cockerel. I got him for the hen's protection after my very gentle rooster passed. They're older hens.
I've have had him separated in a large area since I got him. He has an auto door but prefers to roost under a tarp covering his area. I force him to go in his small coop every night...
I rescued 12 chickens December. 2018. The rooster is an Australorp.
The last 2 weeks, he has occasionally pecked very lightly at my leg. Sometimes I'm throwing treats, sometimes I'm just cleaning their enclosure. It doesn't feel threatening at all. More affectionate than anything.
Anyone else...
I have an 18 month old Barred Rock who has just trying to crow - I noticed a couple months ago that her comb and wattals (is that how that's spelled?) looked big for a hen which is why I think its her (only hear this while the chickens are still in the coop so I can't see). I do have a rooster...
I was feeding my roosters a combo of layer crumbles, layer pellets, and small amount of cracked corn.
They eat the corn only, so I bought a bag of purina flock raiser crumbles and mixed in a small amount of corn. They just want the corn.
I read that a diet of corn alone isn't healthy. What...
Thanks for responding.
The hen is in a large enclosure with 11 others. It's almost 900 sq. Ft.
The enclosure has everything you suggest - during the day, I leave both coop doors open so she is never cornered.
She has plenty of space and areas to get away but I hate to see her in the coop all...
Thanks for responding.
Originally, the entire enclosure was 35x35. One young rooster died so I had the oldest rooster and 2 of his offspring. As they got older, dad would chase them. Finally, I sectioned off 2 areas for the younger roosters - one, 11x18, the other 10x13.
That leaves almost...
I rescued 15 chickens last fall (4 roosters, 11 hens - 4 adults, the rest chicks).
I've had to separate the roosters. The adult rooster lives with the hens. The lowest hen in the pecking order has pretty much decided to live in the coop (they have a very large enclosure with a large coop in it...
Thanks. The enclosure around the coop seems to be big enough - 35' x 40'. I think the coop is big enough too - I added 2 more roosting bars, 2 different lengths. There is more than enough roosting space. They just all have to get in the door in one piece.
I'll keep my fingers crossed and...
