Call be a grumpy old witch but I honestly thing that crossing into your run without permission is completely unacceptable. I learned from a very young age that you do not go onto other people's property without permission, let alone go mess with their animals
While I understand your position...
My flock free ranges all day. I cut up some raw squash and threw it out to them, but apparently they were more interested in other stuff.
I have tried dried crickets- they are not fans. They love their meal worms and cracked corn. They seem to be enjoying the peels from the home grown...
That is also up for debate. Probably Coturnix Quail. Maybe Bob White. I would really like Mountain Quail but have read they are difficult for beginners.
The other half and I are talking about adding quail next year. So I am trying to locate breeders and information about raising quail in Washington State.
I am located in Central Washington, near Ellensburg. Any advice on breeds or breeders in Washington State would be greatly appreciated. I...
My Golden Laced Wyandotte is actually at the bottom of the pecking order. My RIR are an odd mix of bullies and scaredy-cats. The Australorps and Jersey Giant are calming down-I can't tell them apart yet. The best personalities I have are the Barred Rocks (Roo and Hen) and my Dominique. The EE is...
I assumed it was a case of sunning themselves but, wow, it catches you off guard at first!
The sunshine has been sporadic for the last couple weeks. I noticed this a few days ago. First one then half the flock.

Luckily, I "cleaned" it to put the chicken in but I left the existing dust in place. I heard they would create dust so I figured I would just clean the dust out once. And I agree....OMG the amount of fine dust they create is stunning.
Looked like rain this afternoon when I left, but I doubt it. The wind has been howling around here for the last week (Gusts upwards of 35+ mph). I have been working in the hen house getting it secured and checking and double checking. I see where my drafts are but they are actually really minor...
I was in it yesterday during a pretty good wind storm. One wall is missing because I'm still working on it and the plastic on the floor was just barely fluttering
So my chicks are about 7.5 weeks and they appear to be fully feathered. I took the MHP out of the brooder 3 weeks ago. I have had the windows open to the outside day and night to help acclimate them to the rise and fall of the temperatures. The plan is to get them outside this weekend. We are...
Okey Dokey.
Took me a bit but I found the Washington State thread! Had chickens as a kid. Thought about it for a year or 2 and finally took the leap this year. I ordered 12 chickens online from Mypetchicken. And here we are, almost 2 months later, with 12 chickens=11 hens and 1 roo, 9...
Looks like Amazon carries Hemp Bedding now too. A brief look at the hemp bedding suggests it absorbs more moisture than pine shavings and composts a little quicker.
I am using Kilz Barn Paint White as at least a base coat on everything so far. It has a matte finish that I think would be not as...
It's not the prettiest, straightest or the 100% level but I built them a little roost.
Within 5 minutes 2 jumped on the bottom rung to explore.
The board is there to add another element of "play" for them to explore.
They are 2 weeks old on Monday. The top roost is still about 1.5 feet...
