When I built my chicken, I faced a major problem. I have no trees on my 1 acre of land, so I had no natural shade for my chicken coop.
Here in Oregon, our temperatures rise into the upper 90's in late August and early September, so I needed a solution to keep my coop cool in the hot summer...
I cut some large branches from a downed tree and put them in my chicken run, and every single one of my 7 week old chick's are roosting and loving them.
My chickens are around 6 weeks old, and I was wondering when I can move their food out of the coop, and place it permanently in the run. I feed them "scrarch and peck organic chicken starter" and plan on transitioning them to "scratch and peck organic grower" when the current 40 lb bag runs out...
I am integrating my chickens and ducks together slowly, but the ducks are showing some aggression. What's the best way to integrate my ducks and chickens together, but also reduce the stress on both birds. Can any experienced homesteaders give me some advice. Thank you.
I have 3 five week old Lavender Orpington's, and I'm certain one of them is a rooster, but the other two I'm uncertain about. The one I'm certain about being a rooster has a large comb and wattle that's turning red. The other two Lavender's have combs and very small wattles, but they are yellow...
I designed this 2 room brooder box using 2 clear totes. I cut holes in one side of each tote, covered the sharp edges with duct tape, lined up the 2 holes, and duct taped the 2 holes together. My chick's love it, they get to explore and have fun.
I feed my ducks meatbird food, but for right now I feed my young chick's a chick starter mixed with a little bit of meatbird. Can I switch them over entirely to meatbird in a week or two?
My ducks are 3 to 4 weeks old, and getting feathers, and making my house smell, but it gets into the 40's some nights. If I put a heat lamp in the coop and keep the coop sealed up will they be ok?
I'm getting ready to build my coop, but I need to know if my nesting boxes can be 8 - 12 inches off the ground, or should they be higher? And can my roosting bars be 12 - 18 inches off the ground?
