I am looking for a breed that is able to set well naturally. (Obviously my Pekins are not fitting the bill!). Any tips/experience would be appreciated. Thanks!
Well, there is a big thunder storm happening tonight right now, and the ducks are on the nest, so that is good I guess. We`ll see what tomorrow brings! (hopefully babies!)
She is still setting intermittently... very strange, I can't figure out a pattern. Today she pushed 2 eggs out of the nest, and one of them was broken and there was clearly no baby in it. I guess we will know tomorrow if the others are viable or now (day 28).
3 out of 4 of the remaining...
My Pekin pair has been setting for 25 days and stopped setting yesterday evening! I have noticed the female go to the eggs for about 5 minutes at a time today and last evening, but isn't setting on them constantly the way she was before. The pair is still hanging around the nest, but is not...
Oh, another interesting thing is that at night they will snuggle up together so that there are two hens on each nest.
Poor ladies... they must be as frustrated as I am!!
Ya, I'm sure you're right
I guess that I will have to wait until next year and hope that a couple of the young ones from earlier this spring are males. I will also get a couple of babies from a neighbor, but those won't be ready to mate until next year either. Oh well...
Well, here we go again...
This is the 4th nest in a row this summer that has 7 eggs in it where none are hatching!!
I have 7 adult homers, and my resident male 'disappeared' this spring, and since then I have only had one baby hatch (and that one was the only viable egg in a nest with 4 eggs)...
I have a young male born early this spring who is already making the male 'sound'... Is he just practicing or is he already trying to court the ladies? It would be great if he could breed this summer, as I have way more females than males.

Well, it is day 17 and it appears that the pigeons have stopped sitting on this nest! Bummer. Well, maybe that means that none of the eggs were viable anyway...
Day 12, and at least 3 pigeons are still taking turns sitting on the 6 eggs! I am really curious about what will happen. I hope that at least the 2 from my old 'matriarch' are viable (although I haven't seen her sitting on the eggs at all... I just saw her hanging around the nest when the eggs...
As of this evening there are 6 eggs in the nest! I guess I have at least 3 females (I thought that 3 were females and 2 were males, but I am not sure). Do you think that I should take all the eggs and let them start all over?
My young homers (born last summer) are settling down on their first nest right now. Last night a female was setting, but today I noticed that there are 5 eggs under her!!! What!? I have 5 adult homers... one is the mom to the other 4, and then there are 4 young from 2009. I thought that 2 of...
My Pekins have built a nice big nest in their duck house. I never see them sitting on it, or even going in their duck house for that matter, but they have built this lovely nest in there. They sometimes lay in the nest, and sometimes just on the ground outside the duck house. Does this mean...
