Change in Feed - Chickens not eating?!?

If you want to go back to crumble feed, use duck tape to cover the screen on the bottom of the feeder. I have found that covering both sides works well for at least a few years.

can putting a clip on a chicks foot harm their development?

Where on the chicks foot would you place the clip? I could see having a problem developing if the device somehow restricts their bone/tissue growth. If its just a band around the leg, leave it somewhat loose and adjust it as needed.

    Michigan

I am looking into having a vet clinic check for worms in my chickens. By this point I just assume my chickens have worms because we have had them for about 15 yrs now and one of our chicken houses is where I used to keep my pigs for 4-H, and I KNOW they had worms more than once. I also...

    Michigan

Hi All- I'm from mid-michigan, just south of East Lansing. I was wondering if anyone had some Valbazen Suspension (Albendazole) that they would be willing to sell. I have a good number of chickens, just not enough to warrant buying the 500mL bottle of wormer.

    chicks dying

Use a washcloth with warm water and a little hand soap to clean their butts off. DO NOT just try and pull the poop off, you can sometimes pull their intestines out at the same time. then rinse them off with warm water, dry, then apply the vaseline.

Hawk was eating my hen alive...

You can try to have her heal, but also be prepaired to put her down. For the size of the wound you are describing, she is almost certainly going to end up with a massive infection.

15 week old hen sleeping all the time, not very active.

Try separating her so she can rest. make sure she is drinking fresh water, you could feed her some through a syringe to be positive. wet some of her food, making it more appealing, and offer her lots of veggies to give her more nutrition. does her comb look paler than the other chickens? have...

Laying Pellets vs Game bird feed

Yes the game bird feed will be higher in protein, but it wont hurt them. Instead the chickens will most likely not digest the extra protein because their bodies do not require that much. Now because game bird feed is higher protein than a layer ration, it will cost more per bag to feed. it...

    molting

my chickens are also going through a molt. I feed them some moistened cat food, it has 30% protein from animal sources. this helps them grow back their feathers faster.

    Ill Chicken?

Have you seen the sick chicken eating or drinking recently? It may help to separate the sick one and offer her fresh water and food. you could try wetting the food and making a wattery mash. If she has diarrhea she may be getting dehydrated. If she won't drink the water on her own, you can...

Our five older chickens.....like to hide in the bushes?

Sounds like you have a bunch of explorers on your hands! I to had a problem keeping chickens close to home. So now I make a temporary pen with 50 ft of wire fence and step-in t-posts and herd them in to it each day. we try to move this pen every other day, and the chickens love to dig around...

chickens are so much more smarter than we would like to think

I onece had a buff orpington that followed me everywhere! So one summer when i had to paint the shed, she got covered in brown paint because she stayed right below my ladder when i was working. I have never seen a chicken that loved people more than that one.

Are people really this ignorant about chicken biology?

I think that this whole discussion just proves how far most people are from the farm these days. Recently, I found out that less than 20% of americans live in rural areas. So for the other 80% of americans who live in the suburbs or city the only way they would learn these things is through...

Are people really this ignorant about chicken biology?

I know what you mean, they often seem to know nothing about where their food comes from. Next time you see them ask them where they think chocolate milk comes from. lol

How long do fresh eggs stay fresh?

hens will lay eggs for about a month, and then hatch them out. so if an egg can be in summer heat for a month and still grow a chick, why not store fresh eggs with out refrigeration. I have heard that thats how they did it in the old days, eggs were stored in a cool dry place like a cellar.
