Question, then:
I had the same problem w/a serama rooster. At first he had no problems walking, but I saw that he was nearly ALBINO and separated him. Sure enough, it was mites AND lice! I doused him, everyone else, the ground and coops w/ poultry dust (permithrin), and was surprised to see that kill those little buggers nearly right away!
We pumped some pediatlyte through him, along w/ yogurt crumbles.
By day 4 of some heavy nursing, he FINALLY started to show pink in his comb, etc., and finally red, and he was perked right up...except for his tail drooped to the side. I've had that happen w/ lack of enough protein in Serama's diet, so chalked it up as the mites taking up all his nutrients.
However, it is approx 2 weeks later and he is not walking right. He does a couple of steps and falls down one way, then the other. LIKE a DRUNKARD! I thought he was tripping because of the weight of his big fanned tail tilting, but it's not.
I suspect anemia due to the blood sucking. I mean, he was on DEATH'S door...I was quite surprised he made it. I have been to every single store in a 30 mile radius looking for poly-vi-sol WITHOUT IRON. NOTHING. Either they (
Walmart, publix, Walgreens, CVS, and various baby stores incl Babies R Us) didn't carry it at ALL or they carried it w/ the IRON ONLY.
My question (finally, right?!) since he is anemic, why can't I give him the poly with iron...that is what I have and he needs the extra iron, right?
I have him on a mash of yogurt, starter crumbles (more protein than my layer), and flax seeds, and I have the liquid vit B12 w/ dropper...I have dropped about 1/4cc on the side of his beak this morning. I have vit E gel capsules (400) here, but not sure if that will help. I am more concerned w/ the iron poor blood and how to fix it without a transfusion!
Thank yoU!!!
