I was told by a very experienced local poultry farmer that she considers Battles Poultry Drink invaluable for getting birds over red mite attacks, which is how I discovered it. Hope you have some luck with it... let me know how you get on...

Wow...thank you very much for taking the time to do this! This helps TREMENDOUSLY. I might just have to order this from the U.K. and pay the extra for shipping here to the states if possible.

It looks like it's worth it. Besides, Pedialyte isn't exactly the cheapest...and it doesn't last very long once opened.

So helpful...

For anemic chickens, my vet said I could use the one with iron. Also Red Cell for horses & Dogs, but just a little. Jeffers makes a Poultry Cell for chickens that I've used.

Sometimes I have noticed IME, when they are ill and not feeling well, my chickens who otherwise did not have lice and mites, seem to get covered in them. Hopefully he was ill just due to mites, they are soo tiny.

have just read the great info for help with anemia --thank you caralouise1974 and 4kidz- did use a wormer but would love to know more about the ivormectin- i may not have given correct dosage=did what i was told- but pale combs are showing on a few of the buff girls now about almost 4 months later. i would also love to have info on mites-what if i dont see them because i dont know where to look?
thank you everyone with both questions and answers. i am happy to learn to be a better feather mom.

Hi Sue!

Boy...I think I was helped more than you on this one! I googled WORLDWIDE and could find NOTHING. I put 2 and 2 together by searching DRUNK & mites on BYC and then DRUNK & anemic and voila! He is already perkier and singin like a songbird inside. I think he's happy to get away from his evil twin who was picking on him cuz he couldn't stay upright.

As far as mites go. This is how I found them...on a BUFF silkie chick the day after coming home from a chicken swap. It was getting toward evening and they were in a brooder inside. The owner told me that her feathers grew into one eye and she didn't know why. The next morning, her eye was closed shut w/ puss. As I cleaned it out, I found little buff colored bugs crawling around the eye where the feathers were cut off! They were darting in and out of her eye. Then I looked down at the follicle of each feather, and saw them!! They are really small. I could see them once I had focused in on them, but could not see them otherwise. If you are far-sited, you may want to use a loop or magnifying glass.
I think their eggs look a lott like little teeny white feathers, that are layed in a row at the base of the feather's follicle (I don't know if follicle is the right word...but am thinking of where a human's hair meets the head.)
