MY birds do not go into the coop often at all and sleep int he run at night. My goal was to keep egg production up through the winter. After doing a little research it seems I can set my light to come on at dusk and turn off 4hours later so that's my current plan :)
So I purchased a solar light for my 10'x34' chicken run and was wondering if it was ok to put it on dusk to dawn mode. Will the chickens be ok if the light stays on all night? The coop will be dark, but they typically sleep in the run.
They had been in a coop/run with 8 hens and three more roosters. 7/8 rooster/hen ratio was not working out. Then we moved them into their own bachelor pad and things got better. We've since re-homed them.
None out hens are even a year old yet, and we already have more hens than we have room for them. My DW is addicted. A betting man would say ours will stay until they pass of natural causes ;)
Heya! Welcome to the forums. I am also in my first year of raising chickens and have found these forums to be incredibly valuable as a source of information, as I'm sure you will!
I have two Jersey Giant pullets hatched 22 July. Nothing giant about them yet and they are not with the main flock yet (doing the look but don't touch thing). We have 16 "pullets" in the baby flock and I'm really hoping they are all pullets. That will leave Dobby with 30 hens to watch over though!
You've already received solid advice from people more knowledgeable than I, but I will through in my .02 on breeds. Keep in mind I am by no means an expert. If I was only going to get 6 birds and personality was a concern, I would go with Orpingtons. They are just the sweetest! if you want more...
+1 on everything CatWhiperer said. I did not follow the "build your coop first" bit of advice and it almost put me in a pinch. The poor girls were in the cramped brooder longer than they should have been.
We're still new at chicken raising so this was very exciting for us....We got our first five chickens in April and one had been mis-sexed as a pullet. Once Dottie started crowing we changed her name to Dobby and resigned ourselves to having a rooster. Anyway Dobby the barrred rock rooster was...
