Hi. This looks great! Will a treadle feeder also keep rodents out? We live in Costa Rica in the mountains have a problem with mice and rats, and maybe larger animals at night, but at night I could put a weight on the lid or something. or is there another bird/rodent proof feeder design that you...
Hi all. I have a mixed flock of at least partial Brahman breed chickens (at least that's what I was think they are, lol). Can anyone assist me with a gender id for this white chick. I can't recall the age. I was hoping for pullet, but our gardener thinks cockerel. Let me know if a better photo...
Sounds like a great idea! Problem is our hens are sort of "wild", and sit all over the garden. But I will try to get these two in cold water just to start. Thanks for the suggestion!
Hope this isn't hijacking the question, but regarding culling, we have culled cockerels and older hens, but haven't had much luck with making them tender, no matter how long we've cooked. I even followed a 5 day long coc au vin recipe found on this forum. Any advice on that?

Am in the process of trying this with 2 young roosters - we had a lot due to an unfortunate gender distribution when the girls keep sitting their eggs. We've culled others before and tried making regular soup or stew and it's flavorful but always tough and stringy. So hopefully this recipe will...
Here are some photos. The flock free ranges during the day, so not very easy to photograph each one without duplicating. It's very difficult to identify ages by size because there are some 5 month old chicks (hatched January 1) that are larger than the hens who sat on the eggs. There are about 7...
Hi all. I live in Costa Rica and have a mixed flock of chickens. The alpha rooster is a gorgeous (probably) Brahma mix named Hank. The girls are a range, all a great deal smaller. There are some 5 month olds that were hatched from eggs from Hank's brother and Brahma hens. Unfortunately, the...
