I haven't hatched any more this year yet, I think I will try again in spring and see what happens. The duck eggs haven't got as thick shells anymore, so I wonder if that was causing a problem...
I have read some scientific reports that the more times you turn an egg, the better for the chick as well if I'm being honest. I know I'm giving anecdotal evidence here, but she was saying for her that: dry incubation, turning the eggs three times a day as well as spraying the eggs when you turn...
Sounds like a good plan! And they are so adorable! I love ducks so much too, especially when they have the zoomies haha. You have a Jemima and Juliét! Well, more ducks with the same pattern as my girls haha
I'm sorry that I haven't been able to offer any professional advice on the issues with Strudel, in my honest opinion, I'd try to rule out the noise she makes to being her developing her quack, and the eye issue as a general injury... Ducks are very clumsy... But they are also very hardy and...
Haha, they are twins... Almost. And I'm not sure of the gender yet, we've called him/her peach because she was making quacking noises, now s/he's making drake noises so god knows! My babies (2) must be about 9-10ish weeks now, and my original 3 (2 female, 1 male) ducks are about 7 and a half...
Ducks can make all sorts of weird noises while they are trying to quack for the first time, the breeder I got my ducks from says she has had one duck that was making a quacking noise at 4 weeks, for it to end up being a male in the end!
Oh god I'm dumb, I completely completely forgot about some breeds having different appearances based on their genders... I think the reason I forgot was because my duck has identical markings to yours, but mine is a runner duck. Reading what you've written, it could be something serious like...
Was she quacking before? I have some ducklings around the same age, and one of them has started to sound like the one in your video... Could it be that it's a male? I thought that about my own duckling earlier today after sitting with them for a bit
Hmm, I think this is where the British and American cultures differ, I couldn't fathom just walking into a university haha. I will just have to hope and pray it doesn't happen again :(
Thank you for the very informative post, I had never thought about it being potentially serious bacteria-wise... I actually live very close to a university, though upon looking, they are charging silly rates... Like £200. I suppose I will keep looking at different universities.
Hmm, I'm not sure. I've more heard of people doing it in America, not sure if they do it in the UK? I'll look into it though, but it will have to be if anything goes wrong in the future as the chicks have already been disposed of sadly. Thank you!
Hope you are doing okay... loosing chicks is horrible :( they are such helpless creatures, it's upsetting to see something so innocent die of situations or of its control. And hmm, I'll bear that in mind, though we have tiny houses here in England haha. I don't know anyone on this side of the...
Thank you for your reply! I have a brinsea eco incubator, and they were in my bedroom, so I know the room temperature didn't drop too low or get too warm etc. It eases my mind that you think the same way as me in that if they got to hatch then the conditions weren't completely off... I wonder if...
Hello, bumping this thread because I can still not stop thinking about what went wrong with the incubation. I'm concerned that if I don't know what went wrong, I'll make the same mistake again.
@DuckDuckGooseMum Awww thank you! And yes, runner ducks! If you don't already have some then you should get some haha, they are so funny to watch running around the garden!
