Persimmon Ridge Farm
We are a military family. We've moved just over 10 times and Lord willing we'll make Middle Tennessee our final home. We've lived here two years now and each day we make small improvements to our 64 acre farm we call Persimmon Ridge. Approximately 50 aces is rolling hills...
I agree with Dogfish. You have the right idea; once those dogs hit the wire they'll back off and shouldn't come back. As I'm sure you know, maintaining the wire's power will require your constant observation. My experience has been with laying chicken wire below grade and then either back...
Here's a link to the nipples you may consider:

IMO, the railroad ties are overkill for posts in a run. They will require more effort in: a. having to make a large diameter hole, b. placing them in the hole (they are heavy) and c. either nailing or srewing into them make require a little more effort depending upon the ties. They're more...
In my first chicken coop and run, which were both built to be "varmint-free", I only had their food and water in the run. I never closed the door between the coop and the run so they could go and come as they pleased. It's really a matter of preference; no right or wrong really.

Ken, I hadn't noticed. I'm now living in Middle TN and the barn I had my chickens in was not ready for their arrival. See my post in this index entitled "Converting A Portion of My Barn For Our Coop". I had some animal come in and cleaned the bones off one of my hens. But, I expected...
The Army moved us a couple hundred miles from one city to another and instead of selling our chickens, we brought them with us. The house we moved into needed a lot of work so focusing on the house, I just released my chickens into our new barn and told them to "have at it". They had the run of...
Here's a feeder I made out of rough cut oak and boy is it heavy--but it works!
It has a lid which can hold at least 50 lbs of feed in the middle section and the two smaller sections on each end hold grit and oyster shell. The picture is small but I can draw up a plan if anyone is interested.

I have Black Austrolorps (not show quality; mine are from a hatchery) and I have roosters with red and with a combination of red and black. Here's some pictures I have taken:
These roosters do not have a solid black comb but they have "spatterings" of black.
This rooster has a solid red...
I just finished building roosts for my chickens and I used 2 x 4's. With a 3 1/2" wide roost they seem to have no problem walking and sleeping. I stair-stepped them beginning at 24" off the ground and moving upward every 18" with 12" in between each horizontal roost. Not sure if that makes...
