I hatched some eggs a few weeks ago and sold the chicks. The person that purchased them asked if she could return one chick that had a splayed leg and exchange it for another chick. Now that several weeks have gone by, how can I help this chick slowly repair her splayed leg? Is it even possible...
I swear the egg production has increased almost double since hanging curtains in both my coops! This was such a fun project! I used an old tablecloth I already had on hand and tied them back with twine. My hens were immediately interested!
Can anyone help me with the breed of this hen? She's one of 15 I ordered from a hatchery last spring. She doesn't look like anything I actually ordered.
My husband recently completed our 16'x32' run and added an additional coop. I have the original coop on one end. It was too small for my flock. Adding an 8x8 coop on the opposite end added so much more space for them and they love it!
The scale missing could have been a peck from another chicken. I would definitely remove her from the flock as soon as possible. I know the sticking your finger in her vent sounds scary! I was afraid too so my 24 year old son did it for me. LOL! It really is no big deal, she will probably sit...
Just be gentle and keep your finger in a straight position. You shouldn’t need to go in too far. I had a hen with the exact same issue. I did the warm bath two times, checked internally (didn’t feel anything), then separated her from the rest of the flock so she wouldn’t get picked on. I kept...
It sounds like she may be eggbound. Try placing her in a warm bath for 15 minutes or so and massage her belly. You can also check inside her vent to see if you feel an egg. You can put on a surgical glove lubricated with vaseline and using your index finger, gently check inside her vent.
I can relate! I started last year with six (my first dive into chickens). Lost two of those last fall/winter. One to a predator and one was an unknown death. Went to the feed store this Spring and my husband said, “better get a few more!” So home I went with six more chicks. Then a hatchery...
I had a friend share her knowledge about using the “deep litter” method in her chicken coop. I’ve been doing it as well and wondered if anyone else uses this method? Is it better for the chickens, or should I go back to my original method of cleaning the coop every week?
I usually just add about a teaspoon to a gallon of fresh water. Apple cider vinegar has vitamins, minerals and trace elements that are beneficial to chickens.
Try taping their legs together with a very small piece of vet wrap but keep space in between their legs so they can stand properly. I have a friend who has had success with splayed legs by using this method. After a week or so, she was able to remove the tape and the chick survived just fine.
