Ducks Won't Go Into the Pond

For anyone else that runs into this issue, it was timidity in our case! Yesterday they finally figured it out and have barely been out of the water since! Thanks everyone for your thoughts.

Ducks Won't Go Into the Pond

We definitely don't take a humane-catch approach - my husband (who works in forestry) takes the view that since humans got rid of all of their natural predators (especially wolves) there is an unnatural abundance of mink, weasels, etc.

    Duckling refusing food and water

I really hope it isn't the case for you and he makes a comeback! My son (5) was absolutely destroyed when ours got killed by minks. Big hearted kids 💖

Ducks Won't Go Into the Pond

It's definitely possible! We live in the woods so honestly I would never say it definitely isn't the case, though in the 6 years we've lived here we haven't seen any snapping turtles anywhere nearby or in the pond. And since the mink attack(s) we've been very much on top of anything new in the...

Ducks Won't Go Into the Pond

Hi all! I haven't been on here in a couple years and laughed to see that my last post was "ducks won't come OUT of the water!" 😂 Sadly since then we lost all of our ducks (f&^*&^ mink!). About 6 weeks ago we got 5 new female Cayuga ducklings. We started out with them inside in a brooding box...

    Duckling refusing food and water

I had this exact thing happen. The duckling looked like she couldn't stay awake, didn't eat, and eventually her siblings far outpaced her in size (as they grow so fast). I separated her from the others, as they were pecking her and climbing on her, and she eventually died after a day or so. Keep...

Help, my ducks are all Drakes

We went through this same thing with our first batch of ducks that we bought unsexed. We ended up with 3 males and 3 females, down to 1 male and 3 females now. If you buy ducks online you can buy them sexed and they come through the mail just after hatching - there's a special system the USPS...

    help!!!!!!

I live in Vermont and our ducks (Khaki Campbell) have now gone through one winter. Honestly they were happier in winter than they are when it gets really hot in summer. I'd go outside on VERY cold days (5-10 degrees) expecting they would've come closer to our house to find a spot to huddle, or...

    Green Mountain Ducks!

Hi! Yes we've done that before, confined them to the yard, but the issue is 1) the mess and 2) we've seen how much safer they are in the water. In the winter their pond was frozen except for one small portion where they spent most of their time, and we saw coyote tracks around that spot on...

    Green Mountain Ducks!

Thank you, they do! Now if they'd just stop laying eggs in there...haha.

    Green Mountain Ducks!

Sort of - they used to be totally free range, but my husband built a fence that goes down to the pond on two sides now so they have kind of a semi-enclosure. During the day they free range which is why one got knocked off by an owl in the middle of the day :he We think the raccoon got one...

    Green Mountain Ducks!

Hello from the wilds of Vermont! We got our first group of ducks in April 2018. Our property has a large pond that is made up of outflow from an artesian well, and since it gets pretty cold here in Vermont we figured ducks were a better choice for us than chickens. Not knowing how to go about...

Duck won't leave the water/Behavior Changes

Hi all! Want to start off by saying thank you so much - my husband and I got our first group of ducks last spring and these forums have helped us many times! I created an account finally because I need some help and I'm not finding anything. We got our second batch of birds in May - 3 ducks...
