chickens sick, need diagnosing. Pic included

I have 10 chickens. 5 barred rock, 5 new hamps. Lately they've started looking sickly with the feathers all short and matted looking in spots. Mostly at the base of the tail on the back and just behind their neck. Egg production has plummeted. I'm used to getting 5-8 a day. Now i'm lucky...

I've had 8 chicks die my first week...what am i doing wrong.

Personally i'd change out everything and thoroughly clean the brooder, water supply, food supply, etc. Also possibly bad bag of feed? ,mike

    1 week old chicks!

So cute at that size. The yellow ones look like my new hamps and the black ones look like my barred rocks. What breeds?

    my chicks are terrified..

Play with your chicks every day. Feed them while they sit in your lap. A cloth on your lap helps to prevent "he just pooped he probably won't poop, o crap there's poop on my clothes" syndrome. Cup them in your hand, and let their head poke out. Rub their head on your cheeks. Generally just baby...

Dust everywhere! and a couple other questions.

Not ready to put them outside yet. Still building their real coop. Also my wife (preggo) has bad allergies and while she loves the chicks i dont want to induce a dust sneezing fit. When we had them upstairs the noise while trying to sleep was annoying and the smell was bad. The day i got...

Dust everywhere! and a couple other questions.

Ok this is driving me insane. My babies are almost 4 weeks. I put them in a bigger brooder with plenty of room and perches. My base is pine shavings. Last weekend i went out in my garden and and brought in a box of dirt for them to dust bathe and have fun in. All was well for a few days but...

    How much feed daily?

more pics. This was the brooder i put them in until just 2 days ago. They are now in a much larger space now with plenty of perches. I converted an old dresser drawer that was going to be trashed. The newspaper has since been replaced with pine shavings. They LOVED that. Design Flaw...

Who sells eggs with poo on them?

Is bloom the thin layer that can be scrubbed off? I hated washing eggs growin up cause our dad who knew nothing about chickens would make us scrub the eggs until that film came off.

    How to tame chicks

we have 10 chicks and picked 2 of the BR for pets. We baby these 2 by holding them a lot, letting them sit in our laps, give them more outside time than the rest, and just spend time with them in general. When we reach into the brooder the other chicks run except these 2. They'll actually...

    Chicken Killing Family Dog

Once a killer always a killer is dead on from my experience. We had a neighbors dogs repeatedly come back after the first successful kill. This didn't stop until we told the neighbor if the dogs come back again, we were going to shoot them. ,mike

A new chicken to our flock

You may not want to do that to her. Growing up we experimented with meat birds. Prior to that we had only RiR and wanted to try something new. Before we understood what they were truly bred for, we treated them like normal chickens. We successfully kept them alive long enough to start...
