    Egg Breaking

Hi - I wanted to ask the same question...my barred rock is pecking & eating her own eggs! I have had harmony in my coop (2 yrs) until now, she is being bullied by my white brahama, just chases her away from food. I think it may be a self esteem issue! Anyone know what to do???

    Foxes going too far

I just lost 3 of my sweet chickens to a red fox this week. We had never seen the fox during daylight hours, so I let my girls free range during the day, but I guess because of our week of rain, it was hungry - then this morning it came right up to our back door at 8:30 in the morning! someone...

Fox Got A Lot Of My Chickens!

I feel your heartache - a red fox got 3 of my sweet chickens this week and of the 3 I have left, 2 are injured but seem to be doing fine... I'm curious what you plan to do with the fox once you catch it (or caught it?) This has been suggested to us too. Thanks!

    Speckled Sussex?

I have a SS and she's 24 weeks old and still no egg - does anyone know how old SS are when they begin to lay, and what color are their eggs? I did get a speckled egg the other day, but I think it was from another chicken...

    Tips needed for treats, please

Everyday I give my girls organic plain yogurt and they LOVE it! It is so good for them too, makes their egg shells nice & hard, coloring nice & bright, and great for their digestion!

hen picking grass and putting on her back

One of my chickens does this with the straw (on the ground) after she lays her egg - it's very quirky!

    Soft shell-less egg?

Thanks for posting, my bantam laid her first perfect tiny egg the other day, then this morning I saw a broken softie under her roost! Glad to hear it's not bad nutrition!

my chickens can't get down from their roost!

Everything I know about coop design I learned here... Roosts should be no more than 4' high, and nesting boxes should be lower than the roosts So far this all is working great for my flock - I have 2 roosts, and they all climb onto the highest one at night. My nesting boxes are 2' off the...

our coop and run is done!

Love your coop, and your flock looks a lot like mine! We put the chicken wire on the inside of our windows and they open out with hinges at the top (sort of reverse of what you did) I'm going to look into the predator signal thingie - we have had a fox coming around lately, but the girls are...

It's hot and my girls are lying on their sides.

Yesterday my Barred Rock (Fiona) was passed out limp right in the sunshine on hot top with her feet up in the air - scared me half to death! I ran to get hubby and when we returned she was walking around, just fine! She got lots of watermelon after - looks like her little trick worked - lol! Was...

It's hot and my girls are lying on their sides.

My Buff Orp did that the other day, seemed to not be able to get her legs up and was waddling around - turns out she had been taking a dust bath and had a TON of dirt weighing her down - legs went right up after she shook it all out!

    red face BO

I too have a chicken (Bantam Buff Brahma) that gets a red face, and then it goes away, but it happens everyday. None of the others have this issue. She is 10 weeks old and I've noticed it only about the last couple of weeks - they all are on organic starter mash. I also give them organic yogurt...

    I can see the light....

You're good - mine have been out about 10 days now! I put the heat lamp about 30" off the ground and they all snuggle up under it. I just put roosts in last weekend, but the only ones that can hop up on them are the 8 wk old bantams, all the rest are still too tiny. Good luck!

    Plants in chicken run?

Hi - I'm just starting up with chickens too and in my run we have irises - those things are tough to remove, so I've left a patch of them. Our chicks are still small 6 & 3 weeks old - they like to play in the iris spikes, but don't eat them. There were a bunch of low growing weeds, but they have...

    mixing bantam and regular chicks

I put my 4 week old bantams in with new chicks after a week of separate brooders, and all has been wonderful! The bantams are much bigger and act as mother hens to the babies (now 2 weeks old) It's very sweet - wondering if it will keep up over time as the standards get bigger!
