Great info! I, too, am just getting started in goats, and have a chance to buy a mini lamancha in milk to add to the nigerians I am getting soon...it seems like those who have them won't part with them...think I might go for it! (IF I can convince my hubby that the price is worth it)

The girls LOVE their dust baths....I keep a pile of Diotomaceous Earth in the hen house for them to use...they love it and it keeps flies and mites away.
I have a BR hen (almost 2 yrs old) who is walking very slowly, sitting a lot...not eating much or drinking since she has to stand to do so....thought she might be egg bound, so I brought her in and gave her a good 20 minute soak, which she loved once she settled....dunked her head in and drank a...
Hi all! I am venturing into the world of chickens as a Grammy :) My dh raised meat birds once or twice when the kids were little, but I am excited to have gotten 18 "dual purpose hens" (because a friend wanted 3 or 4, and figuring that I'd lose a few...lol...she decided not to take any and I...

There are no stupid questions. Not all chickens get worms, some get them from bacteria in the soil or insects they eat others get them from feces either in their food or water. We had one hen that had gotten gape worm from a bacteria that lives in the intestine of earth worms, but the...

Awww.....I'm sorry....I can't imagine finding one feet up....thanks for the warning, that would have freaked me out! It is sounding like a sour crop....my grand daughters had fed them a bunch of leaves earlier that day, maybe that wasn't a good idea

Sorry for your loss too! (These lil Silkies get under your skin, don't they!?)....Sounds similar...just not a "normal-feeling crop" like it was full of that goopy stuff that the kids play with....slime I think it's called....she was running around pecking at my toes like normal earlier...
Ok, she's gone now....any suggestions would be helpful....my Roo died while I was gone, and I have no idea what from, so I'll appreciate all the help I can get!
If he makes it thru the night, try getting some colloidal silver, and get him to drink it. It's a natural anti-biotic (we use it ourselves!) and you can't give him too much. :^)
I just went out to shut the girls in, and found one of my Silkies (pullet) limp and cool...she has very little life left in her....I can feel every bone in her neck, and though her crop is puffy (almost flabby), it's not hard as though impacted. I don't expect her to last more than another hour...

Do you have a broody hen? I had eggs broken (and eaten) when my hen was trying to steal eggs from other nest boxes...she actually succeeded occasionally, but I have no idea how!! Anyhoo, I gave her some "fake eggs" and though she occasionally moves the fake ones, she is not stealing...

Try putting a bagof frozen peas with a little bedding to cover it under her. Works for me every time.
Oh!! I'll try that!! I have a hen who's been sitting on fake eggs for a month too! I thought she'd have quit by now...before that she was stealing other hens eggs! I have NO CLUE...
I have a hen that I have suspected is moving eggs from other nest boxes to her 'preferred' one' but couldn't catch her. Well, the girls production is down, and I thought it might be because of her "attitude" (CRANKY!!) so I put some fake eggs under her. Hubby "collected them , so I marked...
Czech's_chicks :
Drakes are known to kill ducklings, so what ever you decide to do with the mom and babies, make sure you provide a safe haven for them AWAY from the drake.
That I knew, and we made a separate pen for the drake today, but he sure does want to visit the ladies!
Czech's_chicks...
I have had chickens for about a year now, but am fairly new to ducks......I have 2 Scovy's that shared a nest and are now sharing the babies. I have another Mama sitting on a nest, due to hatch soon, but in a different pen (With the drake, which will get rectified today!). Can I open the pens...

The tail feathers on 'mine' (not any more) just showed up more because of the black tail feathers on a gray Roo I think
Hope you sold lots!
Was a fun swap in Tilton today! Weather was nice and I got a lil burn Sold my Roo (forgot to take a pic first though he was a BEAUTY! ) and the black chicks and brought home some of Chick Magnet's white chicks and a funky one! Hubby's happy (we now have white Silkies ) and I'm happy...
