Has Anyone Raised Murray McMurray's Delaware Broilers?

Post bumping to see if there is any new feedback on these.

    Where to buy CX chicks?

Jenks is my local option, so I'm going with them. There were plenty of good reviews for the CX, they're a good price and I like supporting local if I can. We ordered our pullets from Cackle this summer and had a good experience.

    Where to buy CX chicks?

No worries on the thread hijack! It's interesting to compare different business models. I think I'm going with the local option. I can pick up or just a 1 day shipping, and it's under $2 a bird. I can even pick up food from there if I want that's comparable to our neighborhood feed store option...

    Where to buy CX chicks?

Thanks for the input so far. We do have a local hatchery (Jenks) with good prices. Interestingly though a friend found them to be slower than ones she bought from Wilco (like TSC).

    Where to buy CX chicks?

Want to get ahead of the panic buying of chicks this year and get some babies on order. We are doing 25 cornish this spring. Does it matter where you order from, or are they all going to be the same? I know people like Murray McMurray for example but it would be almost $30 more for the same...

    Raising in winter

Probably 25. I can divide the brooder in half when they are small.

    Raising in winter

Hi all, We are planning on getting chicks this winter/spring. We have a large, wooden 3×8 brooder to keep them in. However, it's located in our uninsulated and unheated shop. Provided we keep a heat lamp or two on them, will they be ok? Lows can be as low as 20 in February, but more likely...

    Brooder feeder ideas?

Looking for advice on a feeding system for our brooder. We have an 8x3 wooden box that can be divided in half so we can raise two batches of chicks, keep them separated, or to reduce/expand the space as needed. This spring we did 25 broilers and it worked perfectly. The problem is once you get...

    Slow growing freedom rangers

Interesting...they have a good looking shape, so maybe it is time. I of course just ordered more food, but we are raising pullets in 6 weeks or so, so probably not a big deal to just keep it on hand until then.

That makes me feel better, thank you! What would the benefit of dropping the protein be?

    Slow growing freedom rangers

My again! :frow Today is 7 weeks, 2 days for our FR. I just grabbed some big looking ones to try and do a weight check (lol). They are in the 3-3.5 pound range, and those are the big ones. As a reminder, they are "free ranged" in a open run, not a tractor. They're active, happy chickens eating...

    Finished another batch.

How do you encourage them to wander and use their run?

    Getting into coop at night

There are some trees in the run that help but no man made structures. They do go in on their own, just inconsistently. Last night all but one made it in. Two nights ago, not a single one did. They run and go *next* to it, so they seem to recognize it as a safe place. There is a nice bright light...

    Getting into coop at night

Oh! Didn't realize. We are in Western Oregon. 25 birds for an 8x8 coop. Plenty of room for them right now. It has a safe amount of ventilation, but we do need to add a back "window" for extra airflow. Birds are 6.5 weeks, been outside for 3. Spent first three days in the coop exclusively before...

    Getting into coop at night

Our Freedom Rangers are in a traditional run/coop set up vs. Tractor so we can use our set up for pullets as well. We have an automatic door set up. It's working well for us except the damn birds won't go in at night and keep trying to sleep outside unprotected. We hung a light inside the coop...

    Slow growing freedom rangers

Follow up question... The birds are starting to put on some weight now! Still small, but I can visibly see growth this week. Anyway, I need to order more food to finish out this project. Would you stick with the 20% crumble or should I switch to an 18% pellet? We are locked into a butcher...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I'm still a newbie but I'm doing a FF for my freedom rangers. I'm using the chart on this site, and initially started at 75% but I'm finding my birds are needing more. I bumped it up to the full 100% and they seem to do better. I'm using a 20% non go, soy free starter but will switch to 18% in...

    Slow growing freedom rangers

Thank you for the replies! I think I just need to adjust my expectations. These are busy, active birds and aren't fed a super high feed full of soy, so they're probably doing exactly as they should. That said I did increase their feed so hopefully they gain a bit more this week. We are...

CX vs FR/DP daily care needs

I haven't done CX so I can't compare. Our FR are in a large, permanent pen. They are fed fermented food twice a day. Easy enough to find someone to do. The current issue is they don't go into their coop at dusk so we have to shove them in. We have travel plans in a few weeks and I'm getting less...
