Hey y’all! Do all chickens squat before they start laying? We have 7, 4 are squatting and 3 are laying. One of our EEs has been laying for two weeks now, but the other EE hasn’t even squatted! I found it odd since they’re the same age... is that normal? Our other 2 that haven’t squatted are the...
Hi! Congrats on your new feather babies and welcome :)
1) We're still new to chickens. We got ours in March this year!
2) We have 7. Started off with 9... one was a roo so we had to say goodbye and one of our silkies died :( But as we've learned, it's common to lose one.
3) We've got a...
So our sweet EE Nora has been laying eggs for around a week now! She was our first to start laying, so naturally we couldn’t wait, but we were so surprised when we saw her first egg! It was a very pale brown. We fully expected blue or green as everything we’ve read said that’s just what they...
Oh I was definitely thinking more plant directed! I’m in southeast Texas and we actually have azaleas in our front yard haha but since they’re toxic I’ll probably need to find something else for the backyard. But yes a flowering hedge sounds beautiful!
Okay so this is probably a strange question, but have any of y'all put up some sort of "sound barrier" around your coop/run area? Our girls are singing their songs to the world, and I don't think our neighbors are loving it. Their coop/run is next to our house, away from all the neighbors'...
We've definitely been trying, but with the houston humidity and the insane mosquito population around here it's almost impossible 😩 Do you know if they can get it again?
From my experience, as well as hearsay from others, roos are typically more social towards people! Some also become the flock bully when they're young. We knew our BCM roo was different as well because of his weight. When we picked the others up they were relatively light, and even though he was...
Well since I'm not familiar with that specific breed, I may not be super trustworthy here haha but I think it looks like a hen! The feathers look nice and rounded, the wattles aren't overly big, and I can't see spurs. It's always frustrating when you can't tell!
Hey y'all, so I've been keeping an eye on some of our girls who have had some white patches on their faces, and I believe they have fowl pox. This morning my Wels looks really bad (now has dark lumps), and I think our BR, Barn and maybe the Easter Eggers may have it as well. We have 7 in our...
Yes! This threw us for a loop at first when one of our two had the curved tail. We also used the coloration to decide and it was right! Thankfully both are hens, but lots of people are giving the wrong advice when sexing them! Great post :)
I agree! I had no idea they would be so noisy... and we even gave our little roo away because of that. We feel awful that they're so loud, and it's frustrating because I love my girls but I don't want to be "that" person in the neighborhood that people don't like. Fingers crossed that maybe the...
Really?! That would be so fantastic if mine are that way. I don't mind them making their little chicken sounds, but the screaming song is a little much 🤪 Hopefully I have your luck... do you free range or have a coop+run?
That’s a really interesting article! I had no idea what that sound was about. She said once they removed the rooster that they quieted down... we don’t have a rooster, so do you think the egg song is a permanent thing?
Hey y’all! So our girls are all around 23 weeks old now and 3 are laying, 4 are not. They were pretty quiet but recently they have been like little alarms! It’s SO loud, I’m getting worried my neighbors are going to start complaining! The current culprits are the EE that’s laying, out Cream...
