I posted on our local animals and livestock site, and a wonderful woman who is a vet tech came and took my ailing duck and is healing her. The infection was beyond me, but she’s got all kinds of skills and veterinary connections. And I couldn’t be more grateful. So my darling duck has a new home...
Thanks. I know this was 5 years ago, but it’s helping me. I think we’re putting Theo down in the next couple days. Infection is in her leg now after two months of antibiotics injections and all the other things. I read once it’s bad it’s very hard for them to completely heal, and it makes me...
Update: so I saw the vet last month and she listened to me and cut the scab off, but said there was no infected core, just inflamed tissue. Did not want to change antibiotics, so I’ve given them a few more weeks of shots. Eloise is about the same? But Theo’s foot and leg are now very swollen and...
Dealing with bumblefoot, and I’m so very very grateful for all the advice I’ve gotten.
What is the best, easiest way to soak ducks feet in epsom salt/betadine?
I always get covered with nasty water, duck gets super pissy after a few minutes. I’ve seen a duck in a bucket online. That looked so...
My instinct says you’re absolutely correct: one always cleans out any kind of abscess, it makes no sense to think it will…fall off on its own? Get reabsorbed? I don’t get why the vet didn’t do that.
Excede (Ceftiofur) 100 mg/ml .5cc into muscle every 3 days.
Vet wants to see them again, so I’ll make the schlep on Monday (they are over an hour away) and we’ll see if they want to change it up, or get the dang staph cores out. I’m going to keep them out of water for the weekend (they’ll be...
They’ve been getting antibiotic shots every three days for the last month. It didn’t get worse, but it didn’t get better. I wonder that the vet doesn’t want to get the scab off and infection out. I was questioning if it could actually heal without removing the core of yuck.
Ok, just started...
I’ve been dealing with Bumblefoot on my Pekins for the last year. I’ve taken them to the vet a few times, given them antibiotic injections, soaked in epsom salt and betadine, sprayed with veterycin, and I just got them shoes. We’ve even figured out how to work together so the shoes aren’t...
Nope. I think she’s sick...I can hear her breathing and she doesn’t look good. Damn.
Aside from giving her lots of fresh water, what do I do? I can see if the vet can see her tomorrow.
Theo is sitting diligently on the eggs in the coop, and the ducks really hate being in the coop, so I’m trying to figure out if she’s sick, or broody. I brought her a bowl of chopped up sweet peas and water, which is her favorite treat, and she’ll only drink the water. Is there a list of things...
Thank you! Ok, washed it out with Systane, and I’ll call the vet in the AM and get the drops.
Also will clean out their stock tank which is huge, but gets gross pretty quick!
This looks like the beginning of something in poor Theo’s eye. I’m going to go wash it out with saline and then refresh their stock tank water.
thoughts? Wash and watch and wait?
first pic is the weird eye, second pic is the good eye.
Reading about deep litter for chickens, but this doesn’t seem as good for ducks because their poop is so mucky. Thoughts?
We’re putting in lots of straw, then the next day I rake off the top layer of muck and add some fresh for the top layer, and if they’ve tipped over their water I take out...
Thanks for this! Ok, I keep trying to bandage their feet (two have bumblefoot) but as soon as they point their toes it just comes right off. What I saw on another site was to spread their toes before wrapping, but you aren’t doing that. Is there any adhesive actually touching their skin? I’m so...
yep, that sure sounds a lot better! Theo fell asleep during her spa treatment. Eloise did the accordion thing trying to get away. For the full twenty minutes. I started playing her duck videos on YouTube, and she calmed down until a chicken came onscreen.
Ok, I’ve got to figure out how to wrap...
So my two Pekins have mild bumblefoot that I am treating as per instructions here (https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/treating-bumble-foot-in-ducks.74245/?fbclid=IwAR1cOiONP6g-vYw17JlVUX5duNiHuZ0I8MeCV6DD-4-FzjNs6pVOxBnnIbM)
how much epsom salt and betadine do I put in the soaking water...
How much epsom salt and betadine do you put in the soaking water? My ducks sores have not opened up yet, so I’ve read that it is still ok to use betadine until their wounds are open, at which point I’ll stop. But how much do I dilute it?
My 8 week old Pekin ladies started molting this week. They still have piles of feathers, but have lost that thick chenille look. Are there times of the season or in their development when it is normal to molt, and if they’re molting when they shouldn’t, is there anything that causes a molt I...
