I’ve had chickens for eight years. It’s been trial and error concerning free ranging.
We had a problem with raccoons for a while. Almost wiped me out 3 times.
So now I have a good system. My coop is 1/2 my garden shed. It’s about 8x10 feet of floor space and 8 ft high. The girls have a 6 foot...
I am not so technical. I usually let the broody hens take care of incubation. Humidity until lockdown today was at 55%. Yes there is condensation on the top windows. Yes air cells match 18 days. I do not have a hygrometer, only what is built into the incubator. I did read the instructions for...
I have a still air incubator. Temperature is set at 102.5 to keep temp at egg level 99.5. Humidity is holding at 55%. I have three days till my 11 eggs hatch and all the water wells are full. How to I increase the humidity at this point? Candled eggs yesterday and all are alive and well so far.
Momma abondoned her best after 2 days with her 3 new babies. I heard peeps from her best and saw a half zipped egg and 5 more eggs with no action.

My daughter has a project where they are hatching a dozen duck eggs at camp. Hatch date was Monday. Tuesday evening adter no one hatched we did candle the eggs and saw some movement in three in and poke holes in five. It is now Wednesday morning and there was no activity. Any suggestions?
One of my BJG hens has a large soft abdomen. She is acting fine but I noticed that she just looks different. First I noticed her backside is large and hangs low. It is mostly bare with new feathers emerging. My first though was egg bound. I held her and she is very heavy and I think I can...
I haven't seen anything around. But I know there are foxs, coyotes, hawks around. I never see dogs in the yard other than mine. They were free ranging at the time. We've been leaving them out for weeks. I expected an occational kill. But 5 completely gone with only a few piles of feathers...
All has been well. Started with 14 chicks...17 weeks later there are 2 roosters and 12 hens. That was until I got home today! Feathers everywhere. So many feathers! I will probably never know what happened but we found 6 all good, 1 confirmed dead (no damage, no blood, no missing feathers)...
My first ever 14 chickens will be 6 weeks this weekend. They sure do grow like weeds. All are in their box in may bathroom and I am ready to move them out. Coop is ready and I am sure they are ready. Just some q's. Do I need the heat lamp in the coop (low 50's at night still)? Will it be...
I am new at this. But I have 14 five week olds and I am loving the pine shavings especially since they are in my house. Easy to change and smells pretty good. Also makes good quick compost.
