Looking for ducks in the Hudson Valley

Hi all, looking to add some ducks to our family of chickens and guineas so we can diversify our egg supply. Ideally Khaki Campbells or some other prolific layers. Does anyone have any ducks or ducklings they'd be open to moving to a new home? Best, Luke

    Hudson Valley NY *chat thread*

Not sure if this thread is still active... I'm looking for some ducks to add some diversity to our egg supply. Thinking Khaki Campbells but open to other breeds that can produce good numbers of eggs! Also fine with ducklings - we can wait the six months until they start laying. Also have a...

Looking for chickens, Hudson Valley NY

I actually managed to find some hens within about ten minutes of us. I found a group on facebook for chickens in the hudson valley and found someone in Ulster Park. They are also not laying yet, but a lot closer than newly hatched chicks would be! If I hadn't got these, I would be very...

Major attack - is this a bear?

Where in the Hudson Valley are you? We're in Bloomington, between Kingston and New Paltz. I haven't yet seen coyotes or fishers, but know they're in the area, and saw our first raccoon nearby a couple of weeks back. We put in some fruit trees in April and they were devastated by deer within a...

Major attack - is this a bear?

No new signs of bear - I put up an electric fence (electric net suggested by Premier1 Supplies) and the flashing LED predator eyes, since then the flock has been safe (at least so far). I managed to locate some replacements within a ten minute drive for the lost birds, though younger so will be...

Major attack - is this a bear?

I put the survivors in our shed, which is much sturdier and haven't seen it try to get in there, though the two carcasses that were left were taken. I noticed that our neighbors run was hit as well. It was much less sturdy than ours but looks like most of their flock survived. Feathers around...

Major attack - is this a bear?

Thanks for these great suggestions. We'll put them somewhere safe tonight (think the shed will be the winner here) and once we have an electric fence up, hopefully that'll keep them away. I found the bears in the forest near the house where they seemed to be settling, so also need to think about...

Major attack - is this a bear?

I ordered the predator eyes as well. Also confirmed it's a bear (or multiple). I followed the trail of feathers into the woods, found various parts of birds and eventually half a guinea. Then I stood in bear scat (cleverly wearing my slippers...). About five feet further in, I saw one or more...

Looking for chickens, Hudson Valley NY

After last night's attack on our flock by what seems to be a bear, we're severely depleted! Lost 11 of our 16 birds, all of which were layers... We now have two male guineas, a cockerel, one bantam hen and an ISA brown hen. Is there anyone in the area that would be interested in parting with...

Major attack - is this a bear?

Spoke to wildlife for DEC - they said either shoot it (not really an option) or put up an electric fence and hope that it's not too determined. They didn't seem too bothered about it being near the house, though. Ordered an electric fence, hope that it arrives before it comes back to finish it...

Major attack - is this a bear?

None of the survivors seem bothered in the slightest... All moving around the coop, don't seem to have any injuries so I think they escaped without injury. Will look into who to speak to about wildlife services!

Major attack - is this a bear?

The coop is probably 100 feet away from the house. We have line of sight to it over the lawn.

Major attack - is this a bear?

Scratches probably four feet off the ground, going higher where it got in. Will see if I can get a game camera and set it up to see if it comes back. Really not much else I can do, other than repair the hole... Will order an electric fence, hopefully it arrives before the bear returns. Then I...

Major attack - is this a bear?

Here are some pictures with a ruler for scale. Also noticed some what look like tooth marks at the top near where it got in.

Major attack - is this a bear?

I don't think we have cougars here - we're in the Hudson Valley in NY. It's a pretty big hole that it tore in the cloth, which is why I thought bear...

Major attack - is this a bear?

Of the two dead chickens left behind, the barred rock hen didn't seem to have any visible injuries, but felt "broken" inside - like broken bones, made a crunching noise when you move her body. The bantam had a mark either side of her breast - pictures attached.

Major attack - is this a bear?

After losing a chicken a day to a fox/foxes when free ranging, we thought we had the problem sorted by only letting them out for 30 minutes before sunset. Between being locked up last night and checking this morning, something visited the coop and tore a big hole in the 1/4" hardware cloth...
