Came home to 15 duck eggs! They weren't laying yet when I left. I have two hens who were hatched in May. Was surprised the woman who came to feed them and let them out each day didn't gather the eggs since I'd told her she could have any eggs they might lay while we were gone. Also surprised by...
Oh boy lol. Guess I'll just have to wait and see how it turns out for us. When I went out to feed the ducks this morning I thought again that 90% of the noise is the two drakes. I hope adding the four new females doesn't result in a huge noise increase but we'll see.
One of my females is basically the "guard duck" at my house. She chases the chickens if they're out of their pen, and if any other bird lands in my yard she'll charge at it. My other female and the two boys are a lot more chill about other birds being in the yard. I'm not sure what the...
Harvested last week. Here are the pictures. Now I need to let it dry out for a few weeks and then de-hull it and weigh it. I think i actually may have gotten close to a pound
I almost picked up some Welsh harlequins locally and now I'm glad they were sold before I was able to ask about them 😂 my two females are a swedish blue and a pekin and they have been pretty quiet for the most part. They were loud for a while when they were younger but now they just quietly...
So, I've spent the past few days just paying really close attention to noise levels and activity among my flock and determined that I think adding some more females will hopefully not cause a noise issue. Ordered a cayuga, a silver appleyard, and two chocolate runners, for November 16.
So everything I've read says the girls are louder. But with my flock of two boys and two girls it always seems to me like the boys are way more vocal and noisy. The girls can be louder than the boys if they want to, like, my Pekin can honk really loud, but most of the time the two girls just...
How is she acting otherwise? Does she seem lethargic, or is she still eating/foraging/etc as usual? I'm not sure what it could be. Not quacking seems odd and I hope she turns out ok
I got it! I wasn't even trying to! I was filming because my Pekin was standing on one foot. Obie (Cayuga) does the head-up-tail-up around the 20 second mark. It looks so hilarious to me and I love it.
The main two things are niacin and water :) they need niacin in their diet for their legs to develop properly, so if you can't find duck food right now then chick starter plus niacin supplementation will work. There's a stickied thread on niacin in this forum. If you can't find niacin...
Make sure you have the right food for it with enough niacin. It'll need a water dish that's deep enough to dunk its whole head under water. If you can't get it a duckling friend right now, put a mirror with it and maybe a small stuffed animal to help it not feel so lonely. Good luck! Ducks are...
I posted a while back when I was worried because my duck had swallowed a banana peel whole and someone commented that their duck had eaten a corn cob and been fine so I probably had nothing to worry about. I'd watch for anyone acting uncomfortable though and make sure everyone seems normal
I have two blue swedish and they like to spend all day in their pools. They have a kiddie pool and a 5ft across 1.5 ft deep pool that they share with two other ducks.
