Thanks Chickie Momma!
I would expect that any eggs that are going to hatch will do so within the next week at most. I candled most of them a couple of weeks ago and most were at least a week into development. Now whether they survive to hatch or not remains to be seen, but if there is...
Thanks for the responses! Kind of what I thought. I'll look at re-homing two of them and see if that helps matters.
I'm also hoping that when my OEG hens lead their babies out and the puppy gets curious, she'll straighten things out!

Chick grit is simply finely crushed stone, shell, etc. that they use to aid in the grinding of food in their crop/gizzard. A 5lb bag at Tractor Supply is $5 or so; your local feed store probably has some on hand as well.
You would do well to get some and sprinkle on their food, much...
I, too, am raising my first batch of "bitties" as we call them in Alabama. I bought 21 RIR and Amercauna. I had 2 of the RIR die within the first two weeks, really within a day of each other. One just died; the other had the same symptoms you describe.
This may sound harsh, but all the old...
I've got 3 roosters (2 too many IMO) and 8 hens. My four OEG hens are brooding and setting in the nest boxes. The other hens mill about the yard with the roos and have been receptive to mating. However, they are not very good at defending the girls; I've got a 12 week old Great Pyr puppy who...
Hey All,
I've got 4 OEG hens that have been incubating for 3+ weeks now. There are only 3 nest boxes so the girls are taking turns setting on 3 clutches of eggs. Anyways, last Thursday, 2 chicks made their appearance in the world. One of them died Friday, but the other is doing well, driving...
I got 21 chicks from a local breeder last Tuesday (they were hatched 2 days before). My big homemade brooder box is full of pine shavings I bought at the local co-op. I showed them the water and the feeder and they've taken to it well. You should also mix in a little "chick grit" with their...
Welcome to BYC! As a relatively new member myself, my hope is that you learn here as much as I have. I live in Corner, which is between Warrior and Jasper.
As for shows/swaps, there were two this past Saturday that I was aware of. The Noah's Ark animal auction in Hanceville (Cullman Co.) and...
Jayare's Chicks :
Hey Ben,
I live just 3 miles down the road from PearlD and I got 1 of her Houdan chicks also a couple months ago. Mine was a Pullet and I just gave it away to my neighbor yesterday. It was a cute mottled looking Houdan and looked like it was from one of her RIR hens.
Does...
Wow, have posted before (even went to Florence and picked up some chicks from PearlD - thanks!), but didn't see the AL connections.
I live in Corner, AL, which is N of B'ham, halfway between Sumiton and Hayden. I've got 18 6 m/o chicks, of which 6 have turned out to be roos. I got 12 of the...
I've got a treated 2x6 for my ladder. I cut notches spaced 4-6 inches from top to bottom. Then, I attached some 1/2 to 3/4 inch twigs with small (4d) finishing nails. The twigs are 6-8 inches long. I can send pics if you like.
Ben
Thank you both for the offers. Would like to keep the distance down due to gas prices, but if nothing else pans out, I will contact you.
I've heard that there is an auction in Hanceville every Saturday at a place called Noah's Ark. Anyone else heard of it?

First time chicken owner, looking for some good layers. Ameracaunas, RIR, Marans, Orpingtons, etc. We're not picky. I finished the coop two weeks ago, have got feed, plenty of room to range and lots of bugs!
I live north of Birmingham and would be willing to drive an hour or so to pick up...
