    Quail upward mobility!

Hi There! I know that coturnix quail are known to not to like using ramps, but I read on here somewhere (can't find it again/remember where I read it on here) that quail will sometimes be amenable to using steps/stairs. I'm trying some experimental quail stairs in my enclosure, to see if I can...

    Cat Deterrents

Hi there! I keep a flock of quail in my .25acre suburban backyard. They live in a large, chicken-wire aviary that we have fortified by creating a secondary chicken-wire enclosure around the entire aviary, with a 1.5' gap between the first layer, and the second layer. (to prevent...

The quail-birds and the bees (kinda NSF...sorry)

The roos in my flock just got old enough to start crowing a couple weeks ago. In the past week, I've noticed...how can I put this delicately...they're running around chasing and humping the hens like a bunch of sex-crazed maniacs. Just yesterday, over a period of just about ten minutes, I...

    Matte shell vs. Glossy shell

I'm a quail noob, and am raising the first generation of my flock. The lovely hens from Nabiki's hatchery started laying just over a week ago, and have proven to be very reliable layers. I've noticed that some of the hens always lay eggs with a somewhat shiny/glossy eggshell appearance (on the...

    Sand consumption?

Hi There! So yesterday I filled in the floor of my quail house, which was formerly just sitting on my lawn, with 700# of sand. (Turns out cleaning quail poop out of grass is an incredibly time-consuming pain in the a**.) The quail were immediately delighted, making enthusiastic chirps of glee...

Help me feather sex my pharaohs?

Hey Quailerinos! Let's play a game? I'll post pics of my eight pharaohs, and you tell me what gender you think they are? I'm really not sure on most of them, and I doubt they'd let me vent check them...they didn't even like posing for these photos! :idunno Thanks for sharing your insights with me!

    Quail cuddle puddles

It's scientifically impossible to tell how many quail are in this cuddle puddle. Do your quail sleep in little clumps like this? If so please deposit your quail cuddle puddle pics here!

Can different quail breeds coop together?

Hi Quailerinos, I have some Coturnix Quail, and a large fenced aviary in my backyard. I would eventually like to integrate some California Quail into my flock. Does anyone know if that's feasible? I mean, do different quail varieties co-habitate amicably when housed together? ...or would...

    Serious question...

What brand of toilet paper do quail prefer?

    Spinach?

I heard that spinach is good for quail so I tried offering them some nice, whole fresh leaves to nibble at. They seem entirely disinterested. Not a nibble. Anybody had success feeding spinach to your quail? What's the delivery method/presentation that they seem to like?

Adjusting brooder heat - seeking advice

Hi Quailerinos, I'm supposed to reduce the heat in my brooder box by 5 degrees Fahrenheit every few days once my chicks are 2 weeks old. Any recommendations on how to do that properly? I've just got this no-light heat emitter bulb, and sure, I could just move it farther away from the brooder...

    Poop post

It's my first time hatching Coturnix and I gotta say, the intake to output ratio on these cute little buggers is bananas! HOW do they make so many poops? They're so tiny! There's no way their eating even half what they're pooping. Mind boggling...

Quail chick died just 20 hours after hatching. what went wrong?

Hi All, One of our coturnix quail chicks hatched at 2pm yesterday and died at 10am this morning. I'm at a loss for what I did wrong and am hoping for your advice & insight. I don't want the same fate to befall my other chicks. Here's how this chick's very brief life went: - Hatched at 2pm...

Hi! Newbie here to forum and to raising Coturnix Quail!

Hi! I live in Northern California and am hatching/raising Coturnix Quail for the first time. I've already made a lot of mistakes and learned some hard lessons during the incubation period. I'm hoping that with more time spent reading these forums I may be able to minimize my future mistakes.
