Very swollen toe, lumpy foot, and infection in 7 mo old Pekin - probably NOT bumblefoot

Good to know! I had both vets tell me that epsom salts wouldn't do any good and not to bother, but then again the non-avian vet also wanted me to keep Pig's foot totally dry and not let her take any baths for weeks on end, and this just wasn't going to fly. I think the poultice is definitely...

Very swollen toe, lumpy foot, and infection in 7 mo old Pekin - probably NOT bumblefoot

I can't begin to tell you how much this made my day! I am SO glad you found some of this info helpful! I haven't posted any follow-ups because life, well, life happened. But thankfully I can say that Pig Duck is doing well and is back with the flock! It took a very long time and multiple refills...

Looking for mealworms for my ducks at a reasonable price.

Great work! Impressive growth. The "albino" mealworm is a normal one that just shed its exoskeleton. You'll see the exoskeleton "flakes" start to build up in their substrate. They go through the process a number of times so you'll find ones like that at all stages of growth until they pupate...

    Indian Runners: Very small?

Also, congrats on your adorable ducklings! Let the duck fever begin!

    Indian Runners: Very small?

I think what @plasticlobster is asking is whether the runners tend to be and remain comparatively smaller as ducklings. Even though runners are smaller as fully grown ducks I have to agree that there looks to be fairly significant disparity in size for ducklings that were theoretically supposed...

    Documenting Day-to-Day Duckie Development

Protein poops are the stuff of olfactory nightmares. I very distinctly recall that moment of horror when I came upon dog poop in the yard that, at first glance, looked to be teeming with maggots or fat worms. Turns out my chow-hound just broke into the whole grains. :lau

    Best all around duck breeds?

I'd like to get some of those eventually. The only downside is they are much harder for most folks to acquire.

For a while I got away with propping one of those standard shallow chicken waterers up on a pan so they couldn't poop in it for drinking water, and providing a separate tupperware deep enough for them to dunk and clean. My theory was if they spill all of their dunking water at least they won't...

    Best all around duck breeds?

I'd look into Silver Appleyards. They are calm, friendly, excellent foragers, the best layers of the heavier breeds, and tend to make good mothers. They're also quite beautiful. If you're looking for something smaller, Welsh Harlequins also fit the bill (pun intended). ;)

If you are worried about the pellets being too big, you could crush them or pulse them in a food processor. You can also extend the feed you have with some oatmeal, cook up some rice for them, maybe feed some thawed frozen peas for added protein? They can even eat scrambled eggs, though for some...

    Documenting Day-to-Day Duckie Development

As long as the chicken grower is non-medicated, you can just use that. Are you worried about the grit because the grower is a drastically different texture, or whole grain or something? What I've done in the past is gone into my yard and pulled a nice big tuft of grass up with roots and dirt and...

Looking for mealworms for my ducks at a reasonable price.

That's so cool! Someone in my area has a peacock and hearing the calls is one of my favourite things about summer. You're well on your way! And you have three or four Muscovies right? That should be plenty for them and easy to get self-sustaining. They're gonna be so happy!

Wow, how did you score that setup? That's awesome! I bet they will love the gamebird feed. How many mealworms do you have?

Looking for mealworms for my ducks at a reasonable price.

I never had a problem with carrots or potatoes and fruit flies, but then again I started my last colony this past fall and fruit flies were less of an issue in general. In my first colony I put all sorts of crazy things in there and had flies aplenty, but they didn't really create any issues for...

    Duck Therapy

One of my Pekins has been living indoors while she recovers from a foot issue. When I had to move her duckling buddies outdoors, I started holding her so she wouldn't feel as lonely. I couldn't help but think how she would make such a great therapy animal. I observed the same effect when my...

This is the truest thing and I'm so relieved to see it said by somebody else. I started calling the straw I would add to my Appleyards brooder "murder straw," because they would scream and run for their lives like they were being brutally murdered every time I added a fresh batch.
