Best all around duck breeds?

I'd look into Silver Appleyards. They are calm, friendly, excellent foragers, the best layers of the heavier breeds, and tend to make good mothers. They're also quite beautiful. If you're looking for something smaller, Welsh Harlequins also fit the bill (pun intended). ;)

I just have Muscovy but they are great! 2/4 of mine are puppy dog tame and just run up and wag their tails and love being pet and snuggled. Plus all of them are quiet and they lay a pretty ok amount of eggs.

I would look into golden cascades, bread by probably the most accimplished duck breeder of all time, dave holderread. They are medium weight high egg production birds designed to be the perfect backyard duck.

I'd like to get some of those eventually. The only downside is they are much harder for most folks to acquire.

Pretty easy, holderreads just cut all their ducks except the cascades and dutch hookbills. Just go straight to the sorce! They ship to alaska, so they probably ship most everywhere else.
