I think my young rooster is killing my hens?

Hi, update. Still no ID on culprit but I've stop the chickens from sleeping outside. I redid the dusk to dawn door, think it was a bad light sensor. After door was working again I removed their usual outside roost branch's and the rest sorted itself out. The hens found their way back inside the...

I think my young rooster is killing my hens?

Would well fed squirrel size rats take down a chicken? They laugh at the largest rats traps, I might order a Uhlik Repeater trap for the tune of $260. Or poison but im worried the chickens or other local wildlife would find it

I think my young rooster is killing my hens?

I'm in board with the weasel theory. Ive never seen a weasel in person but I guess they can be here. I have a creek about 200 yards down the hill. Camera batteries are charged, and I'm going to set it up but I've always put the new control board in my desk to dawn door and am going to retrain...

I think my young rooster is killing my hens?

How about a video! I'm in PA, local predators would be owls, hawks, falcons, racoons, fox, coyote... Attacks have been morning. One the other day around lunch time with me outside working on house 150' away, didn't hear anything odd.

I think my young rooster is killing my hens?

We have last 3 hens in as many days. Hens in hiding positions under logs or in their dust "cave" with heads pulled off laying nearby. No other signs of trama. My coop/run is impenetrable, no signs of damage to bird cloth, no holes larger than a mouse hole. This leaves me to believe something...

    Another new chicken keeper

Bad News!! Vermin have discovered the chicken feed and seemed to have set up a colony nearby. I'm hesitant to try poison since I have a lot of fox, owls, a neighbors cat or two plus my own chickens finding it. So going to try many and many traps set only at night. Any other ideas to catch many...

    Another new chicken keeper

They stay in the coop, the laying hens roost on a branch up in the run by choice. But they all still go into the coop to lay in the nest boxes. That's the area to right in photo behind temporary screen

Yesterday was a lesson. Momma hen us sick of being confined. I let her and the chicks out to free range with the flock. All was going well, a few hens came around but seemed to just ignore them and moved on. Then one hen got too close, momma stood up like and angry goose, neck feathers flared...

3 is the final count. Had 2 pips not make it and another one didn't pip. It's been warm here in Pittsburgh and they are all in the coop. Like I've mentioned, mommas low hen in the pole so I'm going to give it a week or so before letting them hang with the flock. We started letting flock free...

I'm not sure what eggs my wife had me pickup besides 3 of them I know are silkies. There was a green egg that hatched but I don't know for sure if this black with white dot chick came out or the white chick. This chick to me looks like a male olive egger

    Another new chicken keeper

I ended up just using some wire mesh to partition the coop. Hens can still get to a couple egg boxes, broody gets coop to herself. Mesh let's them see each other. I've had 3 of the 6 eggs hatch so far. I'm not sure otherwise, broody won't leave the box or let us peek at what's going on. Just...
