Hello! Thank you for checking in! I’ve been busy with my hens and roosters. I’ve been prepping the garden for spring and I’ve adopted two house rabbits. 1 daughter, 16 hens, two roosters, two bunnies, 3 dogs and two cats take up so much of my days (of course this non top of working full time).
I have a few hens that have been enthusiastically loved by our abnormally big rooster. This has resulted in some feather loss. I have implemented hen saddles and I’ve been rotating the hens in and out to give them a break.
The girls that I rotate out, get outside time but I keep them saddle...
I feed them and unsalted peanuts in the shell. I’ll also feed them bread or sunflower seeds. . I go into the field around daybreak and toss a few handfuls of food onto the ground. I invested in a crow call to attract them initially. After a few weeks I didn’t need the call. They’re extremely...
The best thing you can do to keep hawks away is to feed the crows. Hawks and crows are natural enemies. I faithfully feed the crows in my field and they’ve never let me down when it comes to chasing a hawk away. It’s an awesome sight to behold.
I appreciate any insight you may be able to give. I have a 6 months old hen and I don’t believe she’s laying yet. I went out to the coop yesterday and found her resting under the coop. I picked her up and brought her inside. I felt for an egg(externally) and I wasn’t able to feel anything. She’s...
Hello! I have six 5 month old chickens that have never been outside due to problems with coop construction. The coop is almost ready and it’s time to move them outside. Any advice on transitioning young adult chickens to the outside in winter?
Thank you
I’m so sorry to hear about your girl. How is her poop? I look to the poop for clues when trying to figure out what is going on. Watery, discolored, solid? Is her crop normal or squishy? Is she panting?
This was a great article. I have lost production red hens due to ovarian cancer. It’s a horrible thing that these hens are produced to lay an abnormally high number of eggs in exchange for their life. If your chickens are your pets you should do yourself a favor and skip this breed.
Hello and sorry for the long post.
I have a 12 week old rooster and his sister that have been kept separated by a fence from my 6 hens. Yesterday, I watched one of the hens stick her head through the fence and pull out one of his feathers. I was keeping the 12 week olds in a wire crate in the...
