Will doves get along with chickens?

i regularly have wild doves stroll into the coop to help themselves to the chickens' food. my hens let them and won't go near the feeder with the dove on it. drives me crazy. i'd prefer they attacked.

Rehomed roosters used as bait for cockfighting?

Quote: this definitely happens. if you're on oahu, you might try calling asagi hatchery and asking if they know a safe place for him to go to.

Help Chicks Going After Each Other's Eyes!

i had one who did this non stop for the first couple days. i had to separate her out for fear of someone losing an eye. she was still in the brooder but within a cardboard box (the box they came in) and could see the others through a couple holes and definitely hear them. this was really hard...

Any other way to prevent coccidiosis than chick starter?

lots of people don't feed medicated starter. i went with a slow but steady exposure to the future outside area. at around 10 days old i started putting clumps of dirt and grass in their brooder for them to mess around with. shortly thereafter i started taking them outside to play for short...

New Brooder and Pics of the Girls - Opinions?

brooder looks quite nice. good work on blocking drafts and providing lots of space. you might think about adding some vertical structures so they have something to jump up and down on and learn to roost on. this could be a brick, a block of wood, etc. also keeps them from getting too bored...

They Are Here! Pics- Lot's O' Pics!!!

Quote: Hmmm, you got me looking at pictures, and Lucy may well be a Buff Brahma, which is NOT what I ordered. Anyone else have an idea which she is? don't go jumping to that conclusion just yet. i have 3 light brahmas (from meyers) and they looked like yours as babies. i've also seen totally...

    Is it a favorties thing?

i have the same thing and had wondered if it was because of the extra attention they get. but i've also wondered if they seek the extra attention because they are traumatized and just need a break.

what are you charging for a dozen?

over here on oahu, i'm selling eggs for 6 dollars a dozen. my girls get organic feed. that's cheaper than a dozen organic eggs at the store. i'm real small time though; i only sell a couple dozen a week. i haven't been good about keeping track but i think the egg sales should cover the cost...

    Open/Fresh Air Coops

here is mine. has worked quite well the last 6 months. the floor is sand. the roofed side of it has 2 five foot roosts with a poop board under it. i have some big girls so i also used a sawed off pool slide ladder to help them climb up. the whole thing is 5 feet by 16 feet or so. i...

Strange tail feathers on my hen... is this normal? (pics)

4 months old is not too young for a molt. juvenile chickens go through several adolescent molts before the real deal. by around 4 months old my 7 chickens could have about filled a small pillow. i think you simply have a hen with a couple wonky tail feathers. give it a couple weeks and i...

Strange tail feathers on my hen... is this normal? (pics)

i had a 4 month old brahma with tail feathers like that. had me very worried for a long time. she is a hen though. the feathers smoothed out.

Will it upset the chickens if I relocate their coop within the yard?

quite likely, but they will get over it in a couple days.

    What bedding to use?

i used pellet things that were made, i believe, of pine. for the first couple days i put those down with paper towels on top so that they would learn where real food and water was. the pellets were great because when they got wet they broke down into sawdust which sifted down to the bottom...

    Spring flock plans: go/no go?

just wanted to throw my 2 cents in. brahmas are known for being gentle giants and mine have proven to be such. they do lay brown eggs so can't help you there. if you don't want lights brahmas, which are primarily white, then how about some buffs or darks? all the colors are very pretty...

    Free range advice

i don't really free range (i have a small backyard that they get to roam in for some parts of the day) so perhaps my thoughts are not so valid. however, you could experiment with only letting them out a couple hours before dark. since dark always drives them to their beds in the coop and their...

    Chickens relocating distance

i'm on oahu. chickens do have it easier on the islands. however, mongoose and even rats can kill the chickens and of course dogs too.
