How do I prevent roosting?

Why don't you prevent them from going to unwanted "roosting places" with an appropriate place to roost? I'm sorry, but it's a natural behavior for chickens and they will be happier if they do.

I agree with first posts, there are other options to bridge that gap. There are stiff types of chicken wire that will stand up by themselves - more expensive, but stille.

how wide is the stall space? could you just put tarps between the stall walls to create a lower "ceiling"?

i would tie a piece of rope on top of the stall and then add plastic to the side that goes to the horses feed or u houses them. also could u cut out a opening [chicken door] and manual shut it.
you could your own heater to and set your water on it too

Attach chicken wire to the top of the stall walls making a flat cover, or just run a 2 foot wide strip around the edges, using 3 foot wide wire. Pictures would help, but I imaging stall walls going up 7.5'. Staple the wire to the outside of the stall walls and run along the edges. Sounds like a 20 minute job.
