Adding Run to Open Air Coop

I have 4 chickens who enjoy this fenced in area throughout the day. They also have supervised free range time in the morning and before dark. The fenced in area is just stakes with chicken wire and bird netting over the top. It works but its not ideal. I was thinking of building a run and...

    Any roosters?

Thats was the one I questioned the most. She is also the first one to start bocking..the rest are still chirping so I wasn't sure if that means anything.

    Any roosters?

I think she would be considered an olive egger. Their father is a Lavender marans and the moms were cuckoo Marans, welsummer, Barnevelder and green egg laying Easter egger. The white ones are from the Easter egger, because of dads dark egg gene she would be called an olive egger.

    Any roosters?

I started with 6 and when they were 4 weeks old I had 2 that were bigger, had red combs and were constantly fighting with each other so that was easy. These 4 are now 10 weeks old. I tried to determine their gender by the neck feathers but I would love some experienced thoughts on if they are...

    Foundation with cinder blocks

I changed direction and just created level ground and put down 2x4s to rest the coop on. Once down I put a hardware cloth apron around it to keep burrowing predators.

    Hardware Cloth and Chicken Wire

I bought a chicken coop from someone on craigslist and when it arrived it was enclosed with chicken wire. I went ahead and just put hardware cloth over the whole thing so now it has a double barrier with both chicken wire and hardware cloth. It's hard to see in/out of the coop with all the...

    Growing so fast!!

i was amazed at how fast my 6 grew out of the 30 gallon tub I had them in when I first got them. They still had space but they were ready to jump out so I moved them to a large dog create and everyone is happy.

Chicks kicking shavings into the water

I had the same issue but then I changed my brooder to a dog crate and gave them a lot more room. They love scratching so if the brooder isn't big enough its just going to get hit with the debris. I finally can stop cleaning it every couple of hours...so much better!

Hose or water source for cleaning

I am trying to find the perfect spot for the coop but I don't think I will have a water source in reach. How many times a year will I need to use the hose to clean? I did see some people use a rain barrel but I wasn't sure if that was just for drinking water.

    Screened Porch and Hawks

I would keep them in a dog crate on the porch. They are in the windowless garage so I would love for them to actually have the natural sunrise and sunset. 2 at a time sounds like a good idea. I can handle that and can't wait to see them doing their thing!

    Screened Porch and Hawks

I am thinking about moving my chicks from the garage to the screened porch when they are 3 weeks old. We have some serious hawk action in the backyard. Do I have to worry about hawks coming through the screen to get to the chicks? I also wanted to bring them out for some supervised free...

    Foundation with cinder blocks

I'm planning on using cinder blocks as the foundation to level the coop/run. I have watched a million videos but nobody shows how they are securing the coop to the cinder block. Do I just secure the wood to the cinder block using construction adhesive and then attach coop to the wood i secured...

    No hen house?!

Thanks for the quick reply! I was just noticing most other coops have a closed in box for the chickens to go at night so i got nervous i missed something important with the build. He is making me a larger version of this. 10x4 for our 4 ladies.

    No hen house?!

I bought this coop from someone on Craigslist. The guy is bringing it next week but I just noticed there is no hen house, just a perch. Do chickens need a hen house? How will I keep the chickens warm in the winter if there is no way to close them in?!
