    Avian genetics video

Hope this is OK to share. I am in no way connected to this video, just find it interesting and helpfull. Thought I would share since there are so many others that are interested in genetics. Avian genetics: Introduction to poultry breeding video (Be warned, it is 58 minutes long. But IMO...

    Question for Ameraucana breeders.

How much more prevalent is cross break in the breed, than in chickens in general? (I have heard that it is more common in the breed, but want to get the word from actual breeders and not just google.) Is it something you think/worry about, or just something that is dealt with if/when it happens?
  3. Cattle dog Mom

Question for breeders. Especially those with more than one breed, one of which is more uncommon.

Do you find it easier or more difficult to find buyers for a more uncommon breed? Talking about breeds, not crosses.

Dark Brahma rooster x speckles sussex hen. Color genetics help.

Has any one done this cross that has pictures of the offspring as adults? Or can someone tell me if there should be an early difference in the colors of the babies? Have a friend that has chicks from this cross. They are old enough that they are getting their big feathers. And at this point...

Any ideas on HOW to get my girls to go and STAY outside?

I have 4 mottled Java pullets roughly 6 ish months old. They REFUSE to go and stay outside. They will come out for a little while, but then right back inside they go. Keep in mind that they have as much or more room INSIDE as some peoples do outside. ("Inside is a12x12 ex horse stall. Run is...

How do I convince my pullets?

That everything is NOT hot lava? Granted they have only been here 3 days. They seem to be convinced that they need to live INSIDE only. (The "coop" is 12x12 and there are only 5 girls so they have plenty of space inside. But that isn't the point. LOL) They like to be outside a little bit. I...

I am officially a chicken owner! (Mottled Java's)

    Did something change?

On my alerts, for a while, it would show say 5, if I went andread one, it would automatically mark that ONE as "read" then it would show 4 on the alert symbol. Etc.... I was also able to "mark read" each one individually without going to the thread if I chose. So today, it will show say 5, if...

Does anyone let their chickens sleep outside?

In a secure run? I am also talking about "letting" them if they choose, rather than "forcing" them into a "hen house" during the hot months. I have been considering using an existing "building" as a "coop". Works great in the cooler weather. (Currently use it for my turkeys.) But it does...

    Which do you prefer?

3 foot or 4 foot hardware cloth? (For making a run.) And do you have a reason for your preference?

    Roost height?

I see over and over that the roost shouldn't be "too high" (due to risk of possible injury jumping down.) however I never see what "too high" actually IS. Girls in question are mottled Java's (which are LF just in case anyone doesn't know what Java's are. And should be on the larger end of that...

    Please help me decide.

I know each has it's benefits and drawbacks. Just wanting to know which you think might be better in my situation and why I live in the high desert. Snow and cold (Rarely below 0F, and it if is colder than that, it is only a few degrees.) in the winter and a fair amount of fog too. It can be...

Who has birds with beards and lives where there is REAL winter?

Do you have any issues with their beards getting wet when they drink and then freezing? (I read this was possible somewhere on some website and thought I would ask here.) (This is obviously for those that use any kind of waterer other than the nipple ones. LOL)

Question for the color genetics experts!

If you cross a golden spitzhauben with a chamois spitzhauben, what color options are there for the chicks? I talked to someone the other day that has their goldens and chamois together and am wondering what the results will be. (I know they have a chamois rooster.)

Does anyone have only ONE breed?

Just wondering if anyone only has one or even 2 breeds of chicken? Seems like most people have as many different breeds as they have space for. (Not "judging", I am all about everyone doing what THEY want to do!) I'm just curious is all. :)

    Color genetics question.

If someone was wanting to make citron spitzhaubens (which as far as I know aren't available in the US.) what color spitz would you cross with a cream brabanter to try to accomplish this? Would golden work? Or would that just make more goldens and no chance of the cream gene coming thru? Or...

Can I see your Australorp and speckled Sussex HENS please?

I need head shots that show their combs well. I have been considering both breeds, but then I see picture of hens with gigantic combs (like a rooster) and think "absolutely NOT". I'm trying to sort of gauge how common it is for the hens of these breeds to have such huge combs.

    Walnut comb x single comb = ?

If you cross a walnut combed breed with a single combed breed, am I correct in thinking you SHOULD get all walnut combed offspring? (Or am I not using the "comb calculator" correctly?) (And of course the "offspring" could produce multiple comb types themselves depending on what they were bred to.)
