Our "Hens" Started Crowing... near Cincinnati!

This is "Funny" crowing... he's our 15-week Australorp mix... we're hoping to help him find a forever home... we are prohibited from having roosters in our town.

Our "Hens" Started Crowing... near Cincinnati!

The kids knew this was a reality, but now that the rubber hits the road... We just wanted them to understand what goes into producing the food they eat. We've been raising small gardens and this seemed like the next baby step towards understanding the food cycle on a practical level. Our...

Our "Hens" Started Crowing... near Cincinnati!

Thanks for the reply; I've been looking for homes for a few weeks and there really aren't many options that I've found. The boys have had a pretty good run thus far but chicken noodle soup looks like their ultimate fate. I just want to try and put off their execution if at all possible, but I...

Our "Hens" Started Crowing... near Cincinnati!

Thanks! The challenge is that the kiddos are really "attached" to the boys, and for now, they are pretty gentle and friendly and play with the kids... I'm not opposed to consuming them (as I think it's a real-life lesson that they should experience), but mom is weirding the kids out, so it's a...

Our "Hens" Started Crowing... near Cincinnati!

We hatched 8 eggs in August and two of our "hens" started crowing last week... It looks like 5 of the 8 hens are actually roosters and we are prohibited from keeping roosters in our town. I've looked for rescues and called a few farmer friends we have but have had no luck. I do like a good...

    Hello Everyone!

Here are some "better" pics of our gang. We think, but hope, we don't have 4 roosters.... The first one is of the "flock," the second is of the "twins," the third is just a beautiful bird, and the final is a small sweetheart.

    Hello Everyone!

We are in NKY, but I grew up in Lexington. Our eggs came from a family friend who keeps a flock in Spencer Co. and lent us an incubator and all the gear to hatch these chicks in August. We thought it would be great for the kiddos to witness the miracle of eggs hatching and then return them to...

    Hello Everyone!

Sadly, the city ordinance explicitly prohibits roosters within the city... Probably a silly question, but we had our male cat and dog neutered, is there any way to neuter them? Likely there is little return on that investment, and I doubt there are many caponizing clinics for roosters near by!!!

    Hello Everyone!

I'll try to have them take some mug shots... they weren't keen on cooperating last evening! We think 3 are pretty definite maybes, and two others are trending towards roosters too. Thanks for the insight.

    Hello Everyone!

That's what I suspected, but was holding out hope that they weren't. When is the "right time" to rehome these boys? Frankly, they are really friendly fellows, and don't mind being held... The kids are going to be sad but having chickens in our home is introducing them to a different kind of...

    Hello Everyone!

Good Morning, We're new to raising hens and are loving our mixed Black Australorp chicks (now nearly 13 weeks!) We have lots to learn, but these hens (and maybe a few roosters???) are really sweet-natured additions to our family. Sadly, we're not allowed to have roosters in our community, but...
