    dust bath

Clay is slick as snot when it’s wet… Adobe is clay-rich soil with straw or long grass mixed in then it’s formed into (most often) bricks and baked in the hot sun.

Loam is just fertile soil… potting soil is similar…

    dust bath

I get it about the raised beds… here in So. Arizona our ground might just as well be volcanic rock. If you don’t have heavy machinery, you aren’t turning the soil over any deeper than a few inches… and that’s after lots of very slow, deep watering and using a mining pick! 😱 I do know some parts...

    dust bath

I have never seen ‘real smooth dirt’ anywhere… 🤣🙃 Potting soil works I suppose… I wouldn’t worry about finding construction sand (which is just really coarse sand— think miniature gravel…) it’s a dust bath after all. If I had to purchase anything, I’d go with just normal playsand. Or go down...

5 year old hen had pulled all of the feathers off of her butt - extremely poopy butt-What to do?

I’m sorry you didn’t get an answer sooner. Using vaseline, or other products that soothe & protect delicate skin— A&D ointment, BagBalm, etc— will certainly help the skin heal. It is likely that the very strong urates in her stool are “scalding” her bottom. Hopefully, you figured that out for...

    Hen laying deformed eggs

Perhaps the breeder was wrong about her supposed age & it’s possible she’s not quite 1 yr. old... thus maybe she is still young enough to be working out the kinks.

Thick sticky bloom? What is this?

I don’t think it’s an infection— yet, anyway. Typically, infection byproducts are nastier. If you want to be super cautious, you can cook her eggs, shells & all, and feed them back to the chickens. Actually, if you hard boil her eggs, drop them in still covered in goo— then if it looks like...

Thick sticky bloom? What is this?

So, never a goo-less egg from that hen? Are you sure of which hen is laying gunky eggs? Or just ‘one of them’? (Seems unusual enough that it isn’t likely to be multiple hens doing it...) Kinda seems like her “conveyor belt” is wonky. Like maybe she’s producing gobs of albumen (egg white) in...

    Baby chick can’t stand

As far as I know, normal Pedialyte doesn’t have any vitamins in it.... They do have a newer formulation called Pedialyte with Immune Support. That has (among others) Vit D3 and Vit B12 (?). I don’t know how easy it is to find or how much it costs compared to the standard type. Personally...

    Any idea what this is?

Her tongue seems visible in her mouth in the photo... So I doubt it’s that. I think it looks like an abscess that has ruptured. If so, it would basically be a moist, drippy but mostly empty pocket or void. Kinda like a balloon under the skin, but with a hole in it. Heres what to do: use...

    Baby chick can’t stand

Great idea— I keep it on hand always because it is a great rehydration option for people of all ages, and animals too. OP—In case you don’t know, you can get pedialyte from any grocery store, & even most convenience stores...it’s in the baby section, near the formula, usually.

    Progress into coop

To be super clear— eggs will only be fertile if you have a rooster doing the deed with the hens. 😎

    Foundation help

Rather than take up interior space with cement blocks or other weighted things, you can use braided wire and turnbuckles to rig guy-wires from the coop to the ground. Drive “tie-outs” (like they use for dogs... it’s a spiral spike that twists 12-24“ into the ground, and CANNOT be pulled...

    Duck caring for injured chicken

Two thoughts: <tongue firmly planted in cheek :D> You have a talking chicken and you haven’t kept her securely penned? Surely such a hen (who can understand warnings and form coherent arguments for why she should be allowed to do as she pleases) must be very, very valuable? If I had a...

Roost bar and nesting box for this plastic playhouse

Silkies are broody enough without giving them any extra reasons to stay in the nest boxes. Tell them it’s ok to sleep there, & you’ll never get them out again. 🙄🤣

Hatching chicken egg- still alive??!! Help!!

FYI: You can post video by uploading it to YouTube, vimeo or similar platform then pasting a link into a post... it will embed & show up automatically. ~~~~~~~~~~ If you consider that normal body temp for a hen is 105°F (& even up to as high as 106°F when she’s broody) the temp of eggs under a...

    Progress into coop

Yup... Each hen will stake a claim in her favorite box, but it’s possible that some boxes will yet sit unused. One of the funniest things you’ll ever see is the sight of 2, 3 or even 6 :eek:hens all sitting crammed into and stacked atop one another in a single box!! Having more boxes won’t...
