Toys for the Winter Chicken House

We've had -39c some days,my run is wrapped and as long as they have plenty of places to roost to get off the cold ground, they've been hanging out out in the run every day. They have a long branch, a stump and bedding around feeders and waters to keep their feet off the ground

Ended Some Poultry Are Red, Some Are Blue, But Let's Not Forget, They Can Be Barred Too!

Beautiful! My poor Dolly has been getting picked at so she now has a saddle while her feathers grow back. Is it weird that I think she's just the cutest thing in her saddle ? Lol

We don't free range cause there's fox in the area that are very bold. Will walk right past you, grab a hen and take off. As soon as all this snow melts they're getting an extra 80 sq ft. to their run.

Oh ok I've never heard of them but I'll look into it. Like I said I moved everything around to give more "open" uncluttered space and a better hiding tunnel area. Ive already checked the camera and so far no concerning behavior I'll definitely look into the painless peepers Thank you

    Need Clarification - Depluming mites?

Ok so the one that always picks at me when she's in a nesting box and will push other hens out if she wants THAT nesting box. Do I assume its her and put her in my isolated area in the coop?

    Need Clarification - Depluming mites?

Thank you everyone! There is a little in there but yes I do need to add some more now that I've cleaned it again. We will be adding another 80 sq ft to the run this spring which will also give me the room to make their dustbath larger too

    Need Clarification - Depluming mites?

I agree with meds Update this morning..... she seems fine, seems to be ravenous still when it comes to anything that would provide her extra protein. Eating and drinking fine. I rearranged the run and gave it another good clean. Gave them a pile of fresh bedding with mealworms thru it to...

    Need Clarification - Depluming mites?

Thank you I have ordered a saddle for her it will be here tomorrow and I have time to hang out there more today to hopefully find the culprit. My run is 10 sq ft per chicken and my coop is big enough to house double what I have. But one larger one has always been bigger and full of...

    Need Clarification - Depluming mites?

The poor thing is definitely one of my smallest hens. The dominant one won't even remotely let me get eggs if she's in the nesting box.

    Molting Question

She's not preening a ton, not uncomfortable acting by any means and is ravenous when I toss in anything with extra protein

    Need Clarification - Depluming mites?

What do you think this is? Only two smallest hens had feathers by their saddle go downey looking and now one like this. Not acting different, not acting stressed, im still getting 8 or 9 eggs a day from 10 hens, eating well, especially anything with higher protein. Pushing her way into the...

    Molting Question

Maybe you would know. I have two hens who's feathers on their back went from smooth to kind of "downy" looking. And now one has, what I hope is molted rather quickly. You can see at the back of the bald spot what I mean by downy. I got them as 18 week RTL back in September. The weather...

Chickens are eating more than normal

Mine have increased this last week too. The amount they normally go through in 4 days has now been 2 1/2 days. My feeders are closed unless the chickens are out, so if there is a mouse in the run, he can only get what little they drop and haven't eaten. It's been warmer here this week (only...
