    The aseel thread!!!

I have a high pitched call that makes every bird fly to me from every corner of the property. I feel like a chicken whisperer.

I feel like very few breeders care about the standard, honestly. There's a ton of variation out there, with a few points that are agreed upon.

That Atkinson guy who bred them way back in the day claimed 6.6 as the top weight, which may be how the standard got it's numbers.

The ones I've eaten had quite nice carcasses. Cocks - 5.5, cockerels - 4.5, hens - 4, pullets - 3 Twenty percent is allowed, I believe, to make max cock weight 6.6 and hen weight 4.8. I'm going to aim for 6 for the cocks and 4.5 for the hens. Maybe I can get them bigger than that eventually.

They are smaller, but they're still considered Reza up to 6.6 pounds (cocks), which isn't bad. It gave me pause at one time. Problem is, I think very few people have them that big and some are undersized even by the standard.

This site was very helpful to me, and has a breed standard for a larger fowl. http://globalasilclub.blogspot.com/2011/11/ancestors-of-todays-asils-and-all.html?m=1

I'd love to talk to you, and get solid information. It's been slow learning with the guesswork.

One thing driving me crazy over the whole thing is how much gatekeeping seems to happen with breeding gamefowl. Nobody is even willing to discuss what good conformation on an Asil is, and I had to extrapolate from a bunch of other breeds and sources to come up with what I hope is the answer. I...

The guy in Maine acted super paranoid. Had me meet his wife at a store with the birds and called her half a dozen times while we exchanged them. I think I know what he was up to. A second breeder never got back to me. I just can't see the expenditure when so many birds I see posted for sale...

You're very welcome. I had some decent birds from a guy in Maine at one point, before I had a clue how to breed. I don't think they were yours even though they were wheaten as some of yours are. I had to leave them in NH and they're gone now. I am extremely hesitant to buy hatching eggs or...

If you look southwest, you'll see a green glow (over WV). That's how jealous I am lol.

Also, the first hen has a better comb, imo. The big girl has a small spike on the back. I'm happier with the first one, except those dang feet may haunt me for years.

These are the hens I'm deciding between for the cross stag. This one is quite small, but has a wide shape and pearl eyes. Her feet skew towards being ducktoed. This pullet is my largest, but is a bit narrow with no pearl eyes. Her feet are better. I may hatch from both of them, though I...

Your birds are much nicer than mine, Foxfire. I'll be ten years into this before I get anything decent.

Alright, so I don't feel quite as bad not having good pearl eyes. I've got so much work ahead of me. I just picked up a Malay/Sumatra mixed pair that I'm going to grade in to get black, gypsy face and size. The results of these two crossed over that Asil stag and one decent hen I have will...

Sorry I haven't been on in awhile. He's got square shanks but no pearl eye, though it's a bit lighter than the usual brown.

My Asil are Reza. They're hatchery quality though. This stag wasn't too bad. Sorry I'm a bit late to the party here.
