I should have said ours are 11 months old. They went through a big molt in the fall. Now, suddenly all four are are dropping feathers like crazy. I’ve looked them over, no sign of bugs. So I’m at a loss.
I don’t know what’s going on. Our four Buff Orpingtons have started to lose a bunch of feathers. Its winter here in Wisconsin. We feed them Kalmbach HenHouse Reserve. They are out of the elements. I’m at a complete loss as to why they’re losing feathers.
We live in Wisconsin, close to Janesville. Anyone in the area sell Serama chicks? I’ve read that ordering Serama chicks online is not recommended, because of their tiny size. I really want some of these beautiful tiny little cuties!
We covered the “ceiling “ of our coop with hardware cloth, then we put the roof on. Our roof looks like yours. We didn’t want to take any chances with small predators crawling under those openings.
I know what it is, it’s Zeolite. But is it really safe to use for chickens? Do you add it to the bedding? Should it only be used it a well ventilated area? Thanks in advance!
I see so many people use ash from their wood stoves and fireplace. We don’t have either, so no ash. What is a good SAFE mixture for chickens? What type of sand? What type of soil? We have a sand box, we just need to know what to put in it. Thanks in advance!
They will have an outside run for sunshine and fresh air! We just figured with the cold Wisconsin winters, they would be much better with the coop inside the barn. They will be protected from the elements, and predators. I just don’t think we can keep the field mice out. Hopefully the...
This is our setup, the coop is inside the barn. We live in Southern Wisconsin, and it gets cold. Once it’s warm enough, and the chicks are feathered / old enough, they will go in the coop. They will have an outdoor run, and will spend times outside as long as weather permits.
What do you mean by securing the nest boxes? These field mice are small, they can get through really small places. There’s really no way I can close off the nest box, without blocking the other chickens.
Thanks for your reply! Our chicks are only five weeks old, and it’s still too chilly for them to go out. But I want to know what to do, once they are old enough.
I don’t know if this is true or not. I was told that young chickens need about three to four weeks of confinement to their coop, before they fully understand that the coop is their home. And that if we let them out, we will have to chase them all over to catch them. How do we get them in and...
We are surrounded by crop fields. Little field mice are everywhere. Our vet says they really don’t pose a threat to the chickens, and that there’s really nothing we can do about keeping them out. He said we would need a dozen cats, and that wouldn’t make a dent in the population. Any...
