Field mice

We are surrounded by crop fields. Little field mice are everywhere. Our vet says they really don’t pose a threat to the chickens, and that there’s really nothing we can do about keeping them out. He said we would need a dozen cats, and that wouldn’t make a dent in the population. Any suggestions? We can’t have Guinea Fowl, too noisy.
Yeh. Nothing you can do about them.
Why do you want to get rid of them?
I doubt they would even eat the chickens feed and if they did it wouldn't be a noticeable amount.
I'd say just ignore them, they're cute little things.

This is our setup, the coop is inside the barn. We live in Southern Wisconsin, and it gets cold. Once it’s warm enough, and the chicks are feathered / old enough, they will go in the coop. They will have an outdoor run, and will spend times outside as long as weather permits.

Nice! I’ve seen a farmer do this: a prefab inside the barn for their egg layers. They farm soy/corn snd had a few pigs indoors.m, so eggs just for personal use. The chickens got the area by the people door, near the big barn door, so fresh air and sunlight, but out of the elements.

Field mice. Always good to minimize the population of possible, but you’ll never get rid of them. Generally an issue when it is getting cold in the fall, and through winter. So keep it clean snd feed picked up. Hang your feeders at back height so that they are less likely to spill feed.

Close up any gaps to the coop, use 1/4” HWC where needed, as they can’t get through that.
