Hi Everyone - My 13-year old son really want to raise blue Ameraucanas - he also likes the silvers. He is willing to start with chicks, but his preference would be to start with something a bit older. We are in Maryland and willing to drive 1-2 hours to pick up. Thanks.
You folks are certainly good for a chuckle. Thanks for lifting my spirits. Believe me - we'll be very careful when choosing our retirement location. I'm not really mad at the neighbors - I should have known better. Ugh.
Thanks to everyone for the kind thoughts. They're off to their new home. It is really my own fault this happened. There are covenants against keeping poultry. For the last three years we have been fine. The neighbors would chat with me about the birds and even keep an eye out for stray dogs...
Hi everyone - I'm dropping my 4 red hens and three baby chick off this afternoon. For the past three years, we have really enjoyed our fresh eggs and pet chickens, but due to a cranky new neighbor, we now have to sell them all.
After these are dropped off, I will only be left with 6, 6-week...
Thanks to everyone for their input on PH and OH living (although not many OH folks responded:)
A few people have recommended TN and KY - anyone else out there have comments about TN/KY living?
Unfortunately, I must sell all my chickens. We have 4 red hens that have been laying for about 6 weeks. They are laying huge brown eggs with many double-yolkers. These hens are very sweet and tame and have been cared for by my 10 & 12-year old sons. They were sold (twice!) but neither buyer...

Thanks for the info Rosalind. We are relatively young (50's) and our health insurance will follow when my husband retires. PA is sounding really nice to me - especially if we can get something within an hour or so of Pittsburgh. Our recent lack of snowfall here in MD has left me...
I *love* Pennsylvania. We have a stream on our property, and of our original 15, I would say 11 is fully wooded. We are truly out in the "boondocks."
We do have decent soil, we fertilize with chicken poo and 10-10-10 and have a bumper crop harvest.
My nearest neighbor to the east is a...
My husband is eligible to retire in two years. We are considering PA or OH as possible places in which to purchase land and create a small homestead. Does anyone live in PA or OH and love it....or hate it.
We would like someplace with four seasons, but not extreme (-30 below type winter...

Jesse - I have sold the four hens. However, I wouldn't recommend you purchase birds before finding out what the regs are for your city and for Montgomery County. Thanks for your interest. Good luck with your chicken venture - you'll love them once you get them.
Unfortunate circumstances are forcing me to sell our small flock of laying hens. We have four Production Reds. They have been laying for about 6 weeks now. They are beautiful hens and have been laying huge, beautiful brown eggs for about 6 weeks now. We are getting lots of double yolkers. My...
