He's just under 5 months and so far they have only gotten greener! I'm curious to see what they look like as time goes on (if he ever lets me get close enough to look...)
This is my barred rock/polkie mutt Pork when he was about 2.5 months old. His eyes were slate grey in the first couple weeks, then started taking on a yellow-ish color and have since turned a beautiful shade of green!
Does anyone else have chooks with eyes like these? They seem quite rare from...
It might have to come to that someday when he gets bigger (and is in his new home), but he's my buddy even if he's a brat! It's hard not to forgive him once he cuddles on my shoulder and rests. :)
I also cannot read every comment but I've seen in several comments now, people referring to this person as my friend. This is just a silly nitpick, but "friend" is a very strong word... I too am aboard the "wack-a-doodle" train. LOL
Forgive me if I seem out of line, but I didn't make this post for people to put on their tinfoil hats and start making up stories about how vegans have brain damage and it's the most horrible diet ever. I myself am not a vegan but let's not be ridiculous here.
Yeah, maybe I misspoke somewhere but I never meant to imply it's somehow unhealthy that she's being fed her own eggs. But that the owner says it's a necessary behavior, and one egg a day was her only source of nutrition besides mixed leafy greens. Now she just gets the greens.
Yeah, I'm not a fan of this take. At all. It's still a living thing capable of suffering. Even if our birds are being raised for slaughter, they deserve a happy and comfortable life in the meantime.
Now instead of a quick slaughter, this bird is being deprived of her most basic needs under the...
Apparently this one does, as they say it's necessary for the chicken's health.
This was while she was still laying.
Truthfully I'm not entirely sure of her breed. Even if I talked to her owner enough to know, I'm sure they probably don't know either. But I'm comparing her body type to that of...
Lives indoors with no other birds and is confined to a dog cage at night, not to mention being malnourished and then shot up with hormones because of the complications of said malnourishment... they look at their poor sick bird and tell themselves, and others, that they're supposed to be that way.
Wow, I didn't expect so much feedback! I'm very glad others share my concerns -- I know this topic can generate some controversy.
Unfortunately, I believe many of you are right; I don't think there's any way to change this person's mind. Any trustworthy care guide or expert advice lobbed their...
Someone I know has a "rescue" cornish/leghorn cross that they stole off a slaughter truck at 6 weeks. She's now 2 years old and poor girl doesn't look healthy at all. She is fed exclusively greens and (previously) her own eggs. She recieves no commercial feed or supplementation. She is fed 3...
The chances of a tornado hitting you are rare, and those of being hit by higher than an EF2 are even rarer. In a tornado watch, I would do nothing. In a warning I would keep my eyes on the situation and be ready to move them if need be.
Read your local NWS reports - does it say "radar indicated...
My little pair of troublemakers turned 4 weeks old this past Sunday! As they get bigger, so do their personalities. These guys sure know how to make me laugh.
I suspect Pork (barred rock mother, polkie father) is a cockerel, with that prominent red comb coming in. He loves to cuddle and perch...
At first I thought I only had one viable egg, it wasn't until I candled again on day 7 I realized another was growing. And I almost didn't incubate that one because it was dirty with a mottled shell!
After being prepared for a lone chick or losing my only embryo, I'm happy with any hatch :)
In my most recent incubation, only 2 eggs ended up developing. I was really hoping hatch would go smoothly and I wouldn't end up with a lone chick, or no chicks. Thankfully, both had a fast and smooth hatch!
Of my six silkie eggs, only one developed. These eggs were older so I was a little...
Okay I was wondering if it would show during candling! Thank you! Both my eggs hatched with no problems whatsoever. Was even lucky enough to record one :)
I agree the viability is unrelated to the position. They were kept at slightly above room temperature so that could have played a role, but overall I think the age is what did it. I knew they were older so I didn't expect a great hatch, no biggie. I would always rather try my luck with old eggs...
