Maybe the curtains would help--if only because it was dark enough that she couldn't *see* the other eggs as well? Can't hurt to try, but I've heard that you need to make a split in a curtain or the chickens won't go through it if they can't easily see to the other side--they're too "chicken" to...
I am so glad to know that worked for you to put her in at night because the early morning is *exactly* what I am worried about. I can't get out there until a little after 6, and who knows how long they will have been up by then. I'll try it. Fingers crossed! :-)
Thank you!!
Erica
I have hens who do this too, but my nest boxes are at ground-level so there isn't anywhere for the eggs to fall so they don't break. Not sure if you could lower the next boxes??
I've had to isolate one of my hens since Sunday for a prolapsed vent. Each day I brought her out to visit in a kennel so the other chickens wouldn't "forget" her, but I think I screwed up today when I let her out because now a couple of my hens (I have 8 hens total; no rooster) are chasing and...
My roo was just given a shot of Ivermectin by the vet and he's on an antibiotic and pain meds...but he's still managing to fertilize all my eggs. :-) Are they safe to eat...even for my little kids?
Thanks!
My rooster has had similar issues (though not that severe) that were due to frostbite for both of his winters so far. Bleeds easily, just as you said--small amounts of blood on our feeder and on the ceiling of the hen house.
So far, it has cleared up on its own in the spring with the...
I'm coming to terms with the fact that my 2-year-old roo may have chronic arthritis. The vet and I can't figure out what else it could be. He appears in good shape (except he still doesn't roost at night) when he is on metacam, but since my vet charges $60 for a 2-week supply, that is not...
Oh, and someone posted this website for me earlier today re: leg problems. Maybe you'll find something helpful here?? https://sites.google.com/a/poultrypedia.com/poultrypedia/poultry-podiatry
I've been researching leg problems a lot lately too because I have a lame rooster, but his symptoms are different than your hen's... I'd say google Marek's and if that doesn't look right google "partial paralysis" with "poultry" to start to at least give you some ideas to start exploring.
Good...
A couple of posters yesterday helped me determine that my barred rock rooster probably has scaly leg mites so I have started treating him for those, but now someone posted earlier today with pics of a barred rock roo with *definite* scaly leg mites...and she said the mites didn't seem to be...
I read about scaly leg mites and thought that might be a real possibility but didn't know for sure if the scales on his legs were raised because I don't have another barred rock or another rooster to compare his legs with. I will look into this further--thanks so much!!
If anyone else looks at...
I, too, have 8 hens to one rooster and needed the Hen Saddle for 4 of my birds. After a couple of months their feathers were back, good as new.
I'm looking in The Chicken Health Handbook by Gail Damerow and it says, "Feather picking...triggered by crowding, lack of exercise, irritation due to...
I'm not sure how to get them to stop plucking feathers...or even what it means when they do, but when my hens had naked backs specifically from the rooster "riding" them, I got hen saddles from hensaver.com and they worked like a charm.
Good luck!
My 10 pound barred rock rooster appears to have red and swollen "knee" joints that seem to be making him lame. Both of his feet and both of his legs also appear to be swollen. He now chooses not to roost at night and is prone to episodes of tipping over--almost like he has a "trick knee". He...
