Update: The little chick passed away 💔😢
Hi all,
My son opened the brooder cage lid yesterday afternoon and the heat lamp fell on top of one of my chicks.
Within seconds i was there and had lifted it, getting it out and checked it over immediately. It seemed that it had signed a slight bit of...
EDIT: Have posted more recent picture of the chicken in question in the thread. Pic i used originally for this was the only one i had where it was about 4 wks old
So I feather sexed this chick as female.
At about 4 weeks of age the comb started developing and i suspected it to be a boy...
So, my araucana has reached day 21 and so far 2 eggs have hatched (she had 4 left). My little pekin bantam (who is her friend and has also raised chicks) decided she’d sit in the coop next to her and just hang out..?
When I went to check on the hen and eggs to see if anymore had hatched my...
Hi there,
thank you for your lovely comment. I think my over-the-too chicken husbandry was what kept my other girls lucky enough to not catch what Henrietta, my sick chook, had. I had isolated her so she could recover with her leg but unfortunately her sneezing and gasping returned and I booked...
Better and not sneezing anymore but she has a limp badly (her left leg) so she’s back inside to recover from that as she can hardly walk. Feels like if it’s not one thing it’s another with her unfortunately
Thank you, I didn’t know I could give fish antibiotics to chickens. Good to know. She a pullet, not laying yet and I’m unsure of weight.
I agree likely a respiratory infection, just not sure why others didn’t get sick whatsoever (chickens are from different people too so should’ve been likely...
Hey! Can I ask what makes you think it’s coryza? she only has nasal discharge, found the cause of smell which was matted feathers in under her wings, cleaned out and she smells okay now. Getting much better since the antibiotics, have started for another week and have been bringing her inside of...
thanks for your reply!
No paralysis of legs, wings or neck, no loss of weight, or grey iris/irregular pupils, no vision impairment, no skin around feather follicles raised or roughened, and only a runny nose! 🤔
I have had my first three chickens for a month now and still only once chicken is sick/ill.
She (a lavender araucana pullet) was initially separated for a week and a half due to sneezing, gasping/gaping, a foul odour and lethargy. She was taken to the vet (who didn’t deal with chickens, none...
I ended up taking her to the vet and got some oxytetracycline hydrochloride medicine. She’s isolated in a big dog cage in the laundry and already seems to be doing a lot better. She’s still sneezing a bit and open mouth breathing here and there but isn’t wheezing or as noisy. This morning (I...
My partner absolutely loves them and he was the one who convinced me to get one many years ago now. I fell in love and now that we have two, they are so amazing with our son (best friends), and are awesome with our new chickens. Great to meet you @penny1960 and lovely to find someone else who...
Hi all,
So I received two Araucana pullets the other day. After getting them home I noticed the lavender pullet was sneeze/coughing on and off (the other was not). I bought some Triple C antibiotic ( https://www.planetpoultry.com.au/healthcare/68-triple-c-vetafarm.html) and have been putting it...
Hi all,
So it's winter in Australia at the moment and we've been having some cold and windy days. My three new chickens are black bantam Araucana pullet, lavender Araucana pullet and an isa x wyandotte hen. Nobody is laying, but they spend the majority of the day eating scratch, foraging on...
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Kind of and kind of not. My grandmother had a pet isa brown called 'Chookie' who jumped the fence one day and decided my grandparents were her 'people'. I had a bit of experience with her. My in-laws also own chicken and over the...
