I haven't gotten all the way through this thread (up to pg 40) but have read enough that I am going to try fermenting the feed for my next batch of meaties due in about a month. In the meantime I am going to also start fermenting the feed for my layer flock but I have some questions regarding...
Is it possible to raise 4 or 5 turkeys with my egg layers. I am wanting to raise a few for the holidays as well and wanted to know if I can add them to the regular flock once they are a couple of months old.

That number is without the neck or giblets. The tail was still attached. I have feed mill relatively close by but not sure how to formulate a ration that would include trace minerals and things or is that very important for the CX.
Thanks for the encouragement. I almost stopped after...

I did not keep good records on the cost to build my tractor. My thoughts were that it will be used for multiple flocks so amoritized over time it isn't much cost. I have roughly 200-250 in the tractor.

My tractor is 24" tall and 12'x12'. Yes, all 75 were in the same tractor. They had water all the time but only fed 3 times a day so they didn't have feed available non stop. It wasn't as exact as some say with 12 on 12 off.
I just finished my fourth flock of broilers and kept really good records for the first time. I have learned quite a few things about raising the CX in a very short amount of time thanks to the people here. I wanted to share the results of my last group and see how I compared to others on here. I...
You might check out Central Hatchery in Nebraska. They have them for .75/hd plus shipping. I just received 75 from Welp about 2.5 weeks ago. They sent 77 but one was DOA and then lost 3 or 4 more within the first couple of days. This is my second batch from Welp and I just haven't been super...

Well, initially I thought of trying to raise and sell chickens for meat for additional income but I don't think it is feasible for us with our acerage. I only have 3.5 acres and it has a fairly large pond on part of it. I am thinking the DP route will keep us in eggs and meat from a...

i do not have my records in front of me...but have always kept track what feeds cost to raise cornish..... the first yr. i ordered 160 pullets...each married child of mine paid for their share of chicks plus feed..seems cost was really low. i did not figure in bedding, electricy...
I am in the middle of the very thing you are talking about. I ordered the bargain package from Mt. Healthy. I received 25 barred rocks, 25 RIR, 25 silver laced wynadottes, and 25 buff orpingtons. Mine are about a month old now. I am curious to see what it will cost to get them ready for freezer...
I finished sending the last of this year's meaties to freezer camp this weekend. I was just totaling cost vs. pounds. I ordered 55 CX from Welp and they sent 57. I put 49 in the freezer at an average weight of 4.5 pounds. It cost me $1.73/pound put in the freezer. That includes cost of chicks...
Congrats! I have done 13 and 15 by myself in the last week. It isn't bad but it sure seems to take me a while to get very many done. I have 20 more to do in the next few days and I will be trying to do them all at once.

I too have the biggest freezer I can find. When my mother-in-law first saw it she sarcastically asked is that the biggest freezer you could find and I answered as a matter of fact it ist. We do tend to eat a lot of meat and trying to change that some to plan meals based of vegetables...
Hey it sounds like you did a great job by staying with it and finishing the chore. I processed two today myself and my first one didn't go nearly as smoothly as the second either. I am certainly no pro at it either having processed less than 50 total. I do believe that with practice and getting...

We eat a lot of everything it seems like. In the last 18 months we have gone through 1 and 1/2 beefs, 1/2 a pig and the last 40 broilers didn't last more than 3 months. I did give some of those to family to try though. I anticipate selling some of these roos to the hispanic and asian...

Don't bring up dancing or my wife will have me out there all the time.
We used to do that at least three nights a week but that seems like a lifetime ago now. I don't remember what it was like to not have kids and other responsibilities to take care of. We enjoy spending our weekends at...

Would it be a fair estimate to use these feed consumption figures for DP roos to 24 weeks of age? If so based on my feed prices I am looking at approximately $7.50/DP bird in feed as compared to somewhere between $5.00-$6.00/CX. Based on these numbers I calculated about 25 lbs of feed...
