Thanks. I think this upcoming spring I will get a couple of Cream legbar pullets, a couple of these Prairie bluebell pullets, and perhaps the super blue eggers. I am also thinking of getting 2 midnight Marans.
Of course that means I have to cull my current flock.
Glad you chickens are ok. You were lucky!!
I had 2 taken a couple of months ago. One was an extra Rooster. Everyone learned a lot from the attack. The chickens are more wary now, and I have witnessed them fending off another attack. Haven't seen the hawk since. If you free range, you have...
here is a picture of his comb. Not a pea comb, it hangs over his one eye!!
I planned on breeding him to my non ee hens, to see if any of the pullets produced green eggs to verify if he had the blue egg gene, but it would be easier to get a blue egg rooster and save a step. Keep my population...
I had 8 roostes out of the initial 24 birds, I am down to 3. One keeps attacking my wife, so he will be soup soon!!! One is ee X isa brown, so he is the only one with a chance of having the blue egg gene. In the spring, i want to get a couple copper marans, and cream legbar pullets. I have 16...
So which breed lays the brightest blue eggs, and which breed lays the largest blue eggs????
I got 6 Easter eggers from fleet farm this spring, they are all laying green eggs. I like and wanted some green eggs, but I also want Blue eggs. The plan for the spring is to add half a dozen pullets...
yep I also have 2 saphire gem roosters.. They are way bigger, ready to eat. Plus I want the potential blue egg gene. One of the 2 gets spared..
so out of the original 22 chickens, that makes 8 roosters. I bought 12 as pullets!!!!
A friend gave me a couple of eggs to hatch. They hatched may 24, so they are 14 weeks old. I've gone back and forth on these 2 several times. I suspect cockerel, but EE have such varied DNA that I'm not sure. Also the ISA Brown hens have such large combs and wattles that I couldn't believe...
Mine are now also 12 weeks old. they look exactly like yours in the photo. The one I was worried about, grew the big comb and wattles and walks upright, and is getting aggressive with the other 2 confirmed roosters I have left. I was reading on one of the hatchery sites, that the sex link is...
We ate 2 of them Saturday night. Grilled over the open firepit. Extremely tender. Kids said it was the best chicken ever. RIR's at 13 weeks. Weren't real big but very tasty.
I cut a hole in the bottom of a big folgers coffee plastic can, for my kill cone. For me, it worked well processing the 4 birds at the same time, I had the kill area, set up my dipping pot on my fire pit, and threw the heads, feathers and offal in the fire. birds were all stacked on before and...
I processed my 4 RIR straight run (all turned out to be cockerels) yesterday. I put a shot of vodka in my coffee and did it. kids and wife would not help.
For me, it wasn't that much different than processing a deer.
